Section D -Short answer questions

1 Q1. What is a Shrub?

Qns. Shrub is a medium-sized plant which has a thin branched stem and the
branches arise from the base of the stem. For example - rose.

2 Q2. How is tap root different from fibrous root?

Taproot - A root which grows vertically downwards from the base of the stem
with lateral roots is called the taproot.
Fibrous root - A root which grows into a cluster from the base of the stem is
called fibrous root.

3 Q3. What is the function of a stem tendril?

Ans. The stem has a long, thread-like, coiling branch called tendrils which help the
plant to climb by holding on to an object and providing support.

4 Q4. Why is the leaf called the food factory of the plant?
Ans. Leaf produces food by the process called photosynthesis and hence called the
food factory of the plant.

5 Q 5. How can photosynthesis be written down as a chemical reaction?

Ans. Carbon dioxide+ water Glucose + oxygen.

6 Q6. What is the calyx? What is its function?

Ans. Calyx is the part of the flower and it is known as the whorl of sepals. It protects
the flower when it is bud.

7 Q7. What is a pedicle?

Ans. The flower is attached to the stem by a stalk or pedicel. The swollen part of the
pedicel is called the thalamus.

Q8. What is pollination?

8 Ans. The transfer of the pollen grain from anther to the stigma of a flower is called
pollination.

9 Q9. What does a seed contain?

Ans. The seed contains stored food which is further used up for the process of
germination.

Q10. Which part of the flower usually develops into fruit?

10
Ans. Ovary is a part of a flower which develops into a fruit.
Section E - Long answer questions

1 Q1. What are the modifications seen in roots?

Ans. When a part of a plant performs a specialised function is called modification of
part. Root modified itself to store food and provide support.
Storage roots
Carrots, beetroot, and turnips serve as the underground storehouse of food hence
called storage roots. Storage roots are edible.
Supporting roots
The roots help plants climb up support as the stem is too weak to stand on its own.
Hence these roots are called climbing roots. For example - money plant and grape
wine.
Some of the roots grow from the base and provide support to the main stem known
as prop roots. For example - sugar cane and maize

2
Q2. What are the functions of the stem?
Ans. The function of the stem is as follows:-
● Stem carries water and minerals from the roots and sends them to the
leaves
● Stem carries food from the leaves and sends to the other part of plants.
● Stem provide support to the branches, leaves and flower.
● Stem of a young plant is green which helps in photosynthesis
Q3. Draw a leaf and label it’s parts. Explain how venation differs in leaves.

Ans.The arrangement of veins in the leaf is called venation.

If veins are parallel to each other, then it is said to be parallel venation. For
example - grass and maize.
If the main vein divides and forms a network of smaller veins, then it is said to
be reticulate venation. For example - Rose and mango

4 Q4. Explain pollination and its types.

Ans. The transfer of the pollen grain from anther to the stigma is called
pollination.
There are two types of pollination
1. Self-pollination- When pollen transfers from anther to the stigma of the
same flower of the same plant is called self-pollination.
2. Cross-pollination- When pollen transfers from anther to the stigma of a
different flower of a different plant is called cross-pollination.
5 Q5. What are seeds? What do they contain and what is their function?
Ans. A small hard part of plant or fruit from which a new plant of the same kind
can grow is called a seed. Seed stores some food in it. The major purpose of
storing the food is to use up at the time of germination.
