This manual has been divided into three parts, in order to help the user find the subject he is
looking for;
The First Part includes the safety rules concerning GBS GROUP S.p.A. machines and/or
plants and the regulations concerning Buyer-Manufacturer relations.
The Second Part describes the machine in all its details, and gives all necessary information
regarding machine installation, operating and maintenance.
The Third Part includes all the details concerning the machine spare parts and all the necessary
information for obtaining them from the Manufacturer.
Inside the manual you will find some specific symbols, with the following meanings:
CAUTION - DANGER: Safety rules for the operator in order to avoid damage to the
machine or its components, or injury to people.
All operations, therefore, from installation to maintenance, must be carried out according to the
instructions herein, in order to avoid accidents and injury to operators or damage to machines.
General Details
Before the operator carries out any intervention on the machine, he must be
instructed by the department managers or responsible appointee regarding the safety
rules in force at the time the machine was installed.
Before using the machine, the operator must read this manual and understand the procedures
for using it and the possible dangers arising from correct and incorrect use of the machine.
Accidents do not happen by chance: any accident is the last link in a chain of events. Before an
accident occurs, an accidental event takes place, i.e. an unexpected event caused byan incorrect
action, or an unsafe condition, or both.
The control, management, maintenance and safety systems of the machine are sufficient to
guarantee operator safety, and to obtain a good product in good hygienic conditions, safeguarding
the good running and efficiency of the plant at the same time.
The customer, therefore, must respect GBS GROUP S.p.A.’s decisions and the solutions stated
in this manual; he should never try, in any way, to tamper with or to modify the mechanical or
electronic systems, nor to exclude alarms or bypass standard procedures.
a) Pay particular attention to the danger and caution warnings given in the instruction
manual and on the relevant warning signs;
b) Comply with all the safety rules in force.
c) Provide excellent lighting in the working area, as provided for by the rules in force, and
in any case,not less than 150 Lux;
d) Make sure that the warning signs on the machines are in good condition and clean. If they
are damaged, they must be replaced by other original ones obtained from the
Manufacturer.
The new adhesive labels must be placed in the same position as the damaged ones;
e) Access to the working area must be restricted to authorized employees;
f) Employees must wear suitable clothing for the operations to be carried out, in order to
safeguard their personal safety and hygiene and to avoid damage to the machine.
Loose clothing must be avoided, as well as loose hair, watches, rings, necklaces and
anything else that could get caught in the machine’s moving parts;
g) Maintenance or repair operations, as well as the everyday use of the machine, must not
be entrusted to drunk, drugged, sedated or particularly tired employees;
h) Do not carry out any operations or interventions on your own that you are not specifically
responsible for or that are not included in this manual.
Avoid the use of inappropriate tools for the operations to be carried out and follow the
procedures detailed case by case;
i) Start the machine only when you are sure you have perfectly understood how it works;
l) The key to exclude some safety devices from the main control board must be kept by
the maintenance operator or by the head of the department.
383-Horizontalbranfinisher GSO/5012-00-en.pdf Pagina 11 Release 00 - 10/03
These people will be responsible for the use of this function, and must make sure that the
keys are never left inserted in the control board;
m) Before carrying out any maintenance or repair operations, the electric panel master switch
must be disconnected by turning it to “0”; we recommend cutting off the voltage to the
machine by pulling out the plug.
Also use the selector positioned to serve the main motor drive. Use the warning sign to
indicate that the machine is being repaired, in order to avoid misunderstandings that may
cause injury to operators, wait until any movement of the machine has completely stopped.
n) At the end of any working day or, in any case, at the end of any working cycle, make sure
that all switches, limit switches and safety devices are efficient.
Switch the machines off using the master switch and make sure that the electric power
supply has been cut off to the master switch.
GBS GROUP S.p.A. will not be held responsible for damage to things or injury to
people if the above listed rules have not been complied with.
CAUTION!
It is absolutely forbidden to remove the safety plates; should they become illegible, they
must be immediately replaced.
GBS GROUP S.p.A. denies all responsibility for damage to things or injury to people
arising from modifications to the machine or parts of it, tampering or removal of protection,
safety devices, warning signs, or from not having followed the recommended safety
procedures.

As a safety guarantee, all equipment and hoisting equipment at the Customer’s disposal
(conveyors, cranes, cables, belts, clamps), must be approved for the loads required by the
Company, and suitable for operating in the specific conditions of the installation area (room
dimension, floor capacity load, etc.).
CAUTION!
GBS GROUP S.p.A. is not responsible for accidents caused by non-compliance with
these instructions.
N.B. All hoisting and transport equipment must be suitable for the working environment. For this
reason it is necessary to eliminate means of transport that emit noxious gases when working in
areas where food substances are being handled.
Recommendations
During machine installation, GBS Group S.p.A. recommends that you strictly follow these
instructions:
a) Organize the site according to the rules in force; display signs stating the condition of
the work in progress, indicating the employees responsible for the different work;
b) Install scaffolding, steps, etc. according to the safety rules in force. Access to the working
area must only be allowed for authorized employees;
c) The employees authorized to carry out installation operations must be equipped with
safety clothing and equipment: boots, helmet, gloves, safety belts, etc;
d) To establish the capacity of the hoisting equipment, check the weight of the different machine
parts in the Bill of Lading and use proper hoisting equipment;
e) Make sure that the machine positioning does not cause difficulty and/or danger to the
installation of other machines or to the personnel;
f) Optimize the working area.
CAUTION!
If the abovementioned rules are not followed, GBS GROUP S.p.A. cannot be held
responsible for any damage to things or injury to people.
General considerations
Machine dismantling should be carried out by a Company specialized in this type of operation.
In any case, we recommend that you carefully examine the machine description in this manual
in order to acquire the necessary knowledge to arrange dismantling operations.
Safety precautions
Operators must be skilled; they must be aware of and follow the necessary safety measures for
their own safety and that of other employees.
A fork-lift or a hoist must be available, with suitable specifications and capacity for the dimensions
of the bulk to be handled, plus the standard supply of tools and equipment required for this type
of operation.
When proceeding with dismantling the machine, we recommend that you first separate materials,
which will facilitate their disposal or recycling. For this purpose, below is a list of the main
construction materials:
Bear well in mind all the national and local rules governing the disposal of polluting material or
material having a strong impact on the environment.
CAUTION!
Do not disperse exhausted oils, solvents or other polluting liquids in the environment!
The most suitable procedures will be established, case by case, according to: the experience of
the dismantler, the particular work conditions and a careful analysis of the machine condition.
In any case, we recommend that you always follow these rules:
- Cut off the electric power supply and disconnect all connections;
- Remove the electric panel and the control equipment;
- Remove the hosing and cable ducts from the water and electric connections;
- Remove the autonomous units (reducers, motors, fans, heating elements, etc.) until only
the machine structural work is left.
NOTE
We recommend that you physically destroy the machine identification plates, so that
they will not be put to any improper use.
This manual will completely lose its validity after the machine it refers to has been
dismantled.
In any case, this machine has been manufactured to be included in a complex plant: it is
therefore forbidden to put the machine into operation before the plant into which it has
been included has been declared compliant with the above Machine Directive.
IMPORTANT NOTE
All connections and operating procedures consequent to coupling with other machines, if
manufactured by a third party, must not interfere with the machine operation dealt with in this
manual, nor with its safety devices.
In the event of damage or injury due to modifications made to set up the plant, GBS GROUP
S.p.A. cannot be held responsible nor prosecuted.

CAUTION!
Should the machine be used for different purposes, GBS GROUP S.p.A. is not
responsible for damage to the machine or things or injury to people.
It is absolutely forbidden to use raw materials that, also as by-products of the process, produce
gases, liquids or any other substance that may affect the people in the environment where the
machine is.
CAUTION!
In the event of malfunction, failure, break-down, etc., this operating and maintenance
manual should always be consulted before any operations are carried out on the machine.
If necessary, contact the GBS GROUP S.p.A. Technical Assistance Department.
The rotor is enveloped entirely by the circular sieve screen, which is also a functional part of the
machine.
Access to the rotor, through the feed spout, is prevented by the machine’s feed pipe. The pipe
is fastened to the spout by means of collars, which are screwed on.
Access to the rotor, through the outlet, is prevented by the outfeed pipe connected to the chute
or to another machine. Again, connection between the parts is achieved with collar fastenings,
which are screwed on.
The drive belts and control unit are protected by the guard screwed onto the frame.
There is a hazard warning label on the guard, featuring blue wording on a yellow background,
telling the operator not to open the guard while the unit is running.
CAUTION!
It is absolutely forbidden to start the machine if the protection guards of the
motorization unit have not been fastened:
- circular sieve screen;
- machine infeed and outfeed pipes with the line’s;
- drive and control unit guards.
CAUTION!
Opening of the fix protections (using spanners or tools) for each maintenance and
control intervention has to be carried out after the source of the machine electric
feeding has been taken off, and provided that the personnel in charge is perfectly
aware of the “General Behaviour Rules of the Personnel in Charge, relevant to Safety”
reported in the General Part of the manual.
CAUTION!
The A-weighted sound level measured for the machine is 75-80 dB (A)
IMPORTANT NOTE
It is important to consider acoustic emission relating to the line as a whole.
Taking into account the accumulation of noise coming from the various
machines, the need to stay for long periods in very noisy areas and the
particular internal structure of the working environment, which could cause
reflection and amplification of sound waves, the Head of the Department must
detect the noise level to which employees are submitted, inform them, and
provide them with protective ear covers.
CAUTION!
• make sure the required clearance between the sides of the rotor and the sides
of the machine casing are as indicated (see figure 7; distances in mm).

Disconnecting devices for electric motors are an integral part of the main electric system, which
can be supplied by GBS GROUP S.p.A., or the Customer’s responsibility.
A disconnecting switch must be installed on all machines with a product by-pass device and on
independent machines and connected to the motor in sequence with the three-phase power
supply. A fourth contact interrupts the power supply to the motor coil contactor and sends an
opening signal to the PLC.
Key control must be installed on all other machines, with three positions that also allow the
motor rotation test to be carried out. For maintenance operations that require the removal of
permanent protection, it is necessary to use both the key control, position “0”, and the main
disconnecting switch on the control panel, at the same time.
Important: The key for the disconnecting switch lock and the key control, must be given to the
person in charge of electric maintenance, who is then responsible for his own exposure to
electrocution risks and for any damage to third parties arising from having left the key inserted
in the panel.

CAUTION!
The personnel in charge of the plant and/or machine installation, when carrying
out installation operations, must follow the “GENERAL SAFETY RULES”
(Paragraph 1.2) coveredin the GENERALpart of this manual.
When opening the packages, check that the content has not been damaged during transport.
Should there be any damage, it must be immediately reported.
For the detailed content, see the packing list.
Instructions for correct machine hoisting are shown in the attached diagram.
The hoisting equipment, the bands and/or ropes, must be suitable to support the machine
weight, see Table 2.
In any case,the weight shown on the machine identification plate must be checked.
Avoid jerking the machine during hoisting operations, and be particularly careful with the
machine’s protruding parts.
Cables used must be long enough that the maximum angle formed is 60°.
CAUTION!
During the handling phases, operators must wear protective gloves and shoes,
and must be careful not to pass under the load.

The attached Periodical Maintenance and Lubrication Table indicates the position of the
screws to be tightened and the corresponding tightening couple. We recommend that you apply
the couple evenly to all screws.
The couples in the table have been determined at ¾ of the screws elasticity limit for a friction
coefficient of 0.12 (accurately manufactured attached screws, lubricated with flat washer), refer
to class M 8-8 screws and with elasticity limit Re= (N/mm) 640.
If the machine is equipped with inspection doors, generally fastened to the machine inlet and
outlet ducts, to take samples for processing and processed samples, they must be positioned
at a distance of not less than 1,000 mm from the machine itself, as shown in the figure, and
must comply with EN-294 norms.

CAUTION!
When carrying out any maintenance operation inside the control panels, for both
general and machine controls, the electric power supply must be cut off from the
control panel by turning the disconnecting master switch to OFF, and locking it
with a padlock, as established in the safety rules.
For electric connection, follow the electric layout diagrams used at the plant, where the sections
of the power supply cables and the specifications for their use are given.
Connect to the motor terminal board so that the shaft rotation direction is the one shown by the
arrow on the machine.
To invert the motor rotation directioon, invert the line connection to the terminal board between
the clamps U1 with V1.

It is necessary to have the equipotential connection of the machine metal framework, with
copper conductor, yellow-green colour, and with 6 mm2 minimum section (EQP).
The continuity of connection must be guaranteed as far as the main earth collector (MT).
Make sure that the connection between the conductor and machine is made at clean metal
points, free from paint and oxidization (marked with the earth symbol).
CAUTION!
The personnel in charge of machine operations must be perfectly aware of the
“General Rules of Conduct for operators responsible for Safety ”, stated in the
GENERAL part of this manual.
TESTS TO BE CARRIED OUT BEFORE STARTING THE MACHINE FOR THE FIRST TIME
Before starting
• Check that all components and accessories have been properly installed.
• Make sure the rotor’s direction of rotation is as indicated on the front of the machine.
To invert the motor’s direction of rotation, swap over terminals U1 and V1 connected on the
terminal board, as indicated in the “Electrical connections” section.
• Make sure drive belt tensioning is correct to avoid the belts slipping.
• Tensioning is achieved with the aid of the belt-tensioning screws - you must loosen the
motor mounting plate’s guide bolts first.
Once you are happy with tension, tighten the above-mentioned plate’s bolts back up.
- Sieve screen
- Beaters
- The whole hub assembly
- Rotor bearings.
24
22
Beaters must be replaced when the processed product’s properties are no longer suitable for
the subsequent processing stage.
Beaters must always be replaced in pairs, opposite each other.
They must weigh the same to preserve the rotor’s dynamic balancing and to prevent conveying
vibrations to the machine during operation.
• To replace a beater, simply unscrew the three nuts (17) fastening it to the shaft’s bars (see
figure 13).
17
Figure 14 also illustrates how the vanes must be angled: the maximum angle must be produced
at the product infeed to encourage its advance.
B: Outfeed side.

Replacing just the beater bars is not recommended owing to the obvious effect this would have
on balancing.
Consequently, you are advised to replace the whole hub assembly with a new one ready-
assembled and dynamically balanced at the factory.
The whole hub assembly can only be pulled off working from the side of the machine opposite
the drive side.
This means you will need to leave enough space in front of this side of the machine to remove
the whole hub assembly.
Important:
When installing the machine, allow for the overall dimensions given in the machine table.
To remove the shaft, therefore, you will need to free its ends from the mounts (see section on
replacing bearings).
Next, remove the circular end plate on the side opposite the drive side, unscrewing the screws
fastening it to the machine casing.
You can now pull the whole hub assembly out of the machine casing.
CAUTION!
Exercise extreme care to avoid the danger of fingers being cut or crushed.
Protect hands with appropriate gloves.

Once you have removed the hub assembly, you can take off the feeding screw - which you are
free to do in the comfort of your workshop - by unscrewing the two units (04) and then pulling it
from its slot (see figure 15).
In the same way, the distributor disc (B) - fitted straight after the screw - and product speed trap
disc (C) can be pulled off respectively by unscrewing grub screws (06) and (13).
C B A
Bearings on the motor side (A) and the one on the opposite side (B) are identical, as are the
flanged mounts.
Hence the disassembly procedure described is valid for both.
