1. Concentrated nitric acid used in laboratory work is 68% nitric acid by mass in aqueous solution.
What should be the molarity of such a sample of the acid if the density of the solution is
1.504 g mL-1 ?
2. Calculate the molarity of each of the following solutions:

a) 30 g of Co(NO3)2. 6H2O in 4.3 L of solution

b) 30 mL of 0.5 M H2SO4 diluted to 500 mL.

3. If the solubility product of CuS is 6X 10-16, calculate the maximum molarity of CuS in aqueous
solution.

4. 100g of liquid A (molar mass 140 g mol-1) was dissolved in 1000 g of liquid B ( Molar mass 180 g
mol-1). The vapour pressure of pure liquid B was found to be 500 Torr. Calculate the vapour pressure
of pure liquid A and its vapour pressure in the solution, if the total vapour pressure of the solution is
475 Torr.

5. Boiling point of water at 750 mm Hg is 99.63oC. How much sucrose is to be added to 500 g of
water such that it boils at 100oC? Molal elevation constant for water is 0.52 K kg mol-1.

6. 1.00g of a non-electrolyte solute dissolved in 50 g of benzene lowered the freezing Point of

benzene by 0.40 K. The freezing point depression constant of benzene is 5.12 K kg mol-1. Find the
molar mass of the solute.

7. At 300 K, 36 g of glucose present in a litre of its solution has an osmotic pressure of 4.98 bar. If the
osmotic pressure of the solution is 1.52 bars at the same temperature, what would be its
concentration?

8. 19.5 g of CH2FCOOH is dissolved in 500g of water. The depression in the freezing point of water
observed is 1.0oC. Calculate the van’t Hoff factor and dissociation constant of fluroacetic acid.

9. Calculate the depression in the freezing point of water when 10 g of CH3CH2CHClCOOH is added
to 250g of water. Ka= 1.4 X 10-3, Kf = 1.86 K kg mol-1.

10. The freezing point of benzene decreases by 2.12 K when 2.5 g of benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) is
dissolved in 25 g of benzene. If benzoic acid forms a dimer in benzene, calculate the van’t Hoff factor
and percentage association of benzoic acid.

11. Using the standard electrode potentials given below, predict if the reaction between the
following is feasible:
i) Fe3+(aq) and Br-(aq)

ii) Ag(s) and Fe3+(aq)

E0Br2/Br- =1.09V , E0Ag+/Ag =0.80V , E0Fe3+/Fe2+ =0.77V

12. Write the cell reaction and calculate the e.m.f of the following cell at 298 K:

Sn(s) │Sn2+ (0.004M) ‖ H+(0.020M)) ‖ H2(g) (1 bar) │ Pt(s)

(Given : EᴓSn2+/Sn = -0.14V)

13. A volatile cell is et up at 25OC with the following half cell ;

Al/Al3+ (0.001M) and Ni/Ni2+ (0.50 M)

Calculate the cell voltage.

[EᴓNi2+/Ni = -0.25V, EᴓAl3+/Al = -0.166V ]

14. calculate the emf of following cell at 25OC:

Sn(s) │Sn2+ (0.001M) ‖ H+(0.01M)) ‖ H2(g) (1 bar) │ Pt(s)
