a. Man’s Social and Cultural Background

“Change is the only permanent thing in this world.”

- Heraclitus
In your observation, what are the things that undergo changes?
Do you believe that everything changes?
In our society, you can see a lot of changes and developments that may affect our lives. This
includes machines and technologies that make our life easier, computers that allow us to have better
communication with other people, and different inventions that result to the modernization of nation-
states.
Nation-state
According to Baleña (2016), this refers to a sovereign state whose subjects (citizens) have their
common culture. This includes having same language, common descent, and they share common
history.
Thus, having citizens with common culture, the nation-state is a major component of one’s
personal identity.
Personal identity
According to Baleña (2016), this is the concept that one develop about themselves over the
course of their lives.
Culture
According to Tylor (as cited by Baleña, 2016) this refers to that complex whole which includes
the following:

c. Significance of Studying Culture

According to Mark Banaag, as cited by Baleña (2016),

culture functions in the following ways and from which
we can realize the significance as well:
1. Culture makes it possible for a man to adapt
and integrate himself to his environment.
2. Culture establishes patterns of acceptable social
behavior.
3. Culture conveys and facilitates meanings
through verbal and non-verbal communication.
4. Culture produces man-made things.
5. Culture contributes to over-all human
satisfaction as we develop ways to make more life
enjoyable.
Therefore, culture creates identities of
individuals which are distinct from one another.
Geographical or territorial boundaries contribute to
cultural diversities of human society.

b. Significance of Studying Society

Society is being formed by the interacton of

individuals (Baleña, 2016). Society is also defined as the
product of human social processes which is intended to
meet the individual’s need for survival. Each society is
organized which includes the rules of conduct,
traditions, folkways, mores, and traditions (Palispis,
2007). Therefore, interconnection and human
interaction are very important elements of society.
Studying society provides us the idea of its
importance in creating a just, equal, and humane
society.

d. Significance of Studying Politics
According to Baleña (2016), the following are the
basic definitions of politics:
The different views of politics according to Ricardo Lazo.
- People associates politics with power.
- This is formed by the relationship with other
people.
- This is also defined as a struggle between the
powerful and powerless; the haves and the
have-nots.

On the other hand, Lazo (as cited by Baleña,

2016) defines the view of politics and shows the
wide ranging ideas about politics which may
affect the everyday lives of each individual in a
society.

Politics talks about the decisions of individuals

whichare made collectively based on define
drules of society. These rules bind people
together to preserve culture and improve human
life.

e. The Rationale of Studying Anthropology

According to Palispis (2007), anthropology is the branch of knowledge which deals with the
scientific study of man, his own works, his own body, his own behavior and values, in time and
space.

Anthropology includes man’s physical, cultural and social development which explains and describes
the phenomenon of human life. Anthropology as a subject is very important in seeking answers
about man’s existence and his own social experiences (Baleña, 2016).

a. Anthropology helps the individuals in providing insights into aspects of past that are strange
or difficult to comprehend.
b. These strage aspects include conflict and violence, the trial by ordeal, superstitions and
witchracft, fashion, myths and legends and others (Banaag, 2012).
c. Anthropology gives people information concerning man’s behavior in relation to his social
environment.

5
e. The Rationale of Studying Political Science

Baleña (2016) summarized the following rationale of studying political

science and its definitions:
a. It refers to the systematic study of a state and its government which includes the
relationships of men to his/her community, relationship of mena dn women to the state
itself, and with the relationship of state with other sovereign states abroad.
b. It emphasizes the usage of power, influence, interest and diplomacy which are very
important aspects in creating a well-ordered society.

According to Ricardo Lazo, the goal of Political Science is citizenship education.

This requires the students to appreciate and understand the duties and oblogations of being a
member of their own society.

Importance of Political Science according to Ricardo Lazo (as cited by Baleña, 2016):

f. The Rationale of Studying Sociology

Sociology is defined by Joseph Fichter (as cited by Baleña, 2016) as the scientific study of
patterned, and shared human behavior. This also refers to the analysis of human interaction and
focuses on the all kinds of social intercations: social arts, social relationships, social organization, social
