HIGH RENAISSANCE
Is a short period of the most exceptional artistic production in the Italian states,
particularly Rome, capital of the Papal States, and in Florence, during the Italian
Renaissance. Most art historians state that the High Renaissance started around 1495
or 1500 and ended in 1520 with the death of Raphael.

It was remarked by a renewed interest in Humanism and the most realistic depiction of
man. It was dominated by many of the greatest artists of all time, including Leonardo
(1452–1519), Michelangelo (1475–1564), and Raphael (1483–1520).

Major forms of art created by artists included Painting, Architecture and Sculpture.

PAINTING

Many techniques were developed to make paintings look more realistic. These included
chiaroscuro, sfumato (softening the transition between colours), foreshortening, linear
perspective, illusionistic devices, and aerial perspective, these innovations allowed
artists to reach the pinnacle of realistic painting.

Humanism revived perfection as the standard of beauty.

High Renaissance period was the most fertile ground for artistic talent and
development. Its innovations and ideals of beauty lay the touchstone for all forms of fine
art to follow.

The subject matter in the compositions was mainly dominated by biblical themes,
portraits of individuals and classical mythology.

ARCHITECTURE.

High Renaissance style in architecture conventionally begins with Donato Bramante,

whose Tempietto at S. Pietro in Montorio at Rome was begun in 1510. The Tempietto
signifies a full-scale revival of ancient Roman commemorative architecture. Many
renaissance structures were built as square or rectangular, symmetrical shapes. The
fronts (façade) of the buildings were generally symmetrical around the vertical axis.
Columns constructed were a replica of roman architectural design.

How does Renaissance architecture reflect humanism?

Humanism changed the way people thought, and that was a major reason why
architecture began to change. Because people thought that they were of central
importance, they began to commission architects for their own use. Also, humanism
caused people to change their view about what buildings were built for.

SCULPTURE.

Sculpture in the High Renaissance demonstrates the influence of classical antiquity and
ideal naturalism.
Sculpture was often used to decorate or embellish architecture, normally within
courtyards where others were able to study and admire the commissioned art work.
Wealthy individuals like cardinals, rulers, and bankers were the more likely private
patrons along with very wealthy families; Pope Julius II also patronized many artists.

During the High Renaissance there was the development of small scale statuettes for
private patrons, the creation of busts and tombs also developing.
The subject matter related to sculpture was mostly religious but also with a significant
strand of classical individuals in the form of tomb sculpture and paintings as well as
ceilings of cathedrals.

Sculptors during the High Renaissance were deliberately quoting classical precedents and
they aimed for ideal naturalism in their works .Michelangelo (1475–1564) is the prime
example of a sculptor during the Renaissance; his works best demonstrate the goals
and ideals of the High Renaissance sculptor.
