STAT 222:REGRESSION AND TIME SERIES ANALYSIS
ASSIGNMENT 1

1. An industrial psychologist is interested in the relationship between age

(X) and an efficiency rating (Y). Data were collected from 20 employees
of a small manufacturing company. Some initial data analyses were
completed; the summary data were:

Pn = 20 Pr = 0.64
x = 796 y = 1, 266
sx = 9 sy = 12

a. Determine the regression equation for predicting the efficiency rating

(Y ) from age (X).
b. Using this regression equation,predict the efficiency rating for a per-
son 45 years old.
c. Compute the standard error of the estimate.
d. If an employee is 45 years old, what is the probability of an efficiency
rating between 58 and 65?
e. Develop CI95 for the predicted efficiency rating (Ŷ ) for an employee
35 years old (X).
f. For the correlation between age and efficiency rating, test the null
hypothesis Ho : ρ = 0
g. Test the null hypothesis Ho : β = 0. Compare your results with part
(f).

2. The director of a national research institute believes that faculty at

larger, more ”comprehensive” institutions have lighter teaching and
advisory responsibilities and more time for research and scholarly writ-
ing. The director develops a measure of institutional comprehensiveness
and a measure of scholarly productivity for psychology departments.In
a pilot project, the director selects 18 collegesand universities and deter-
mines the institutional comprehensiveness and scholarly productivity

of the psychology departments in these institutions. The data were as

P X = 3, 202 P Y2 = 1, 406
X 2 = 635, 616 Y = 111, 370

a. Plot the data in a scatter diagram

b. Determine the regression equation for predicting scholarly produc-
tivity (Y ) from institutional comprehensiveness (X).
c. Draw the regression line on the scatter diagram.
d. For an institution with a comprehensiveness score of 175, predict
the psychology department’s scholarly productivity score.
e. Compute the standard error of the estimate.
f. If an institution has a comprehensiveness rating of 170, what is the
probability that the psychology department will have a scholarly
productivity rating between 80 and 85?

2
g. Develop CI95 for the predicted scholarly productivity rating (Ŷ )
given a comprehensiveness rating of 195 (X).
h. Compute the correlation between comprehensiveness and scholarly
productivity. For these data, test the null hypothesis H0 : ρ = 0.
i. Test the null hypothesis H0 : β = 0. Compare your results with part
h
