Lab Experiment 6
Lab Experiment 6
Lab Experiment 6
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:
Upon successful completion of this experiment, the students will be able to:
To show the magnetic field around the current carrying conductor.
To explain right hand rule to find out the direction of magnetic field around the straight
conductor.
EQIUPMENT:
Stand base with rod.
Two holding rods with insulating sockets.
Current carrying conductor.
12-volt battery.
White plate and compass needle.
NOTE:
Take care of the equipment. They can be damaged by misuse.
The current is switched on for short moment (4 sec. Max).
Before switch on your circuit please get it checked by your teacher.
DISCUSSION:
When an electric current is passed through a conductor magnetic field is setup around the
conductor. The strength of magnetic field is proportional to current. If the current is reduced to
zero, the magnetic field is also reduced to zero. If the direction of current is reversed, the
magnetic field also reverses its direction. The direction of the magnetic field is found by using
right hand rule or using compass needle.
RIGHT HAND RULE:
According to the rule: “Hold the conductor with right hand with the thumb pointing in the
direction of current, then the fingers will point the direction of magnetic field around the
conductor”.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:
TEST RESULTS:
1. Observation of magnetic field exists around the current carrying conductor:
Stew some iron fillings uniformly on the white plate/ at this movement the current is switched on
for short movement (4 sec max). What happened? Write your comments as you have observed
