MTAP Saturday Program in Mathematics Grade 1 Session 2 TG

Topic: Regrouping sets of ones into set of tens and set of tens into hundreds using objects;
visualizing and giving the place value and value of a digit in one- and two-digit numbers;
renaming numbers into tens and ones; illustrating subtraction as “taking away” or comparing”
elements of sets; subtracting numbers; solving routine and non-routine problems involving
subtractions of whole numbers including money with minuends up to 99 with and without
regrouping using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools

I. A-B. Discuss regrouping numbers into tens, ones, and hundreds. They may use
manipulatives/counters, then let the pupils answer the activities.
C-E. Discuss how to rename numbers into tens and ones. Use counters and answer the
activities.
F-J. Introduce the concept of subtraction. Discuss its process, the symbols (-, =), and the
phrases “taking away” or “comparing”. Let the pupils answer the activities orally and written
using their drill boards.
II. Problem Solving
Discuss and analyze the word problems. The teacher may let the pupils read and answer
the problems orally through recitation or they may use drill board to solve and show the
answer to the class.
III. Challenge
Each pupil will answer the problems using their drill boards. The teacher may let the pupils
to show and explain their answers to the class if possible.
Note: The teacher may discuss further to address the pupils’ difficulty in understanding the
topic/activity.
