Total students: 125 + 75 = 200
Students: days = students: days
125 : 16 = 200 : days
Product of the means = Product of the extremes
125 (days) = 3200
Days = 25.6
25 days

3. In a test, the ratio of the right answer to the wrong answer of Athena is 5:3. If she got 18 wrong
answers, how many questions were there?
Answer: 48 questions
Solution: (Direct Proportion) 5:3 = n:18; n = (18 x 5)/3 = 30 correct answers;
Total item = 18 + 30 = 48
4. If a bus travels 160 km in 4 hours and a train travels 320 km in 5 hours at uniform speeds, then
what is the distances travelled by them in one hour?
Answer: bus: train = 20:64 or train: bus = 64:20
Solution: (Direct Proportion) Bus – 160:4 = n:1; n = 20 km; Train – 320:5 = n:1; n = 64 km
The bus travels in 1 hr is: 160 km ÷ 4 = 40 km
The train travels in 1 hr is : 320km ÷ 5 = 64 km
Thus, the distance between them is 64 km – 40 km = 24 km

5. 500 soldiers in a fort had enough food for a month. After 6 days, some soldiers were sent to
another fort and thus the food lasted for 32 more days. How many soldiers left the fort?
(Note: 1 month = 30 days)
Answer: 125 soldiers
Solution: Total food for 500 soldiers = 500 x 30 = 15,000 food supplies; Food for 500 soldiers for
6 days = 500 x 6 = 3,000 food supplies; 15,000 – 3,000 = 12,000 remaining food after
some soldiers left that will last for 32 days. Thus, Number of soldiers left to the fort =
food supply/32 days; 12,000/32 = 375 soldiers left in the port. Therefore, 500 – 375 =
125 soldiers left the fort.
No. of soldiers x days = no. of soldiers x days
500(30) = (500 – n) (30-12+32)
500(30) = (500 – n) (50)
15000 = 25000 – 50n
15000 - 25000 = -50n
The number to be multiplied to -50 to come up with -10 000 is 200.

Solution: 100% - 20% = 80% know how to ride a bike. 80% of 300 = 240 college students
7. In a class of 60 students, 24 of them are girls. How many percent are boys?
Answer: 60% are boys
Solution: 60 – 24 = 36 boys; 36/60 = 0.6 = 60%
8. In a packet of M&Ms chocolate candy, the ratio of red to blue to green M&Ms is 3:2:4. If there
are 180 chocolate coated candies in a packet, how many chocolate candies of each color are
there?
Answer: 60 red, 40 blue and 80 green chocolate coated candies
Solution: 3n + 2n + 4n = 180; 9n = 180; n = 180/9; n = 20; Using substitution, 3(20) = 60,
2(20) = 40 and 4(20) = 80. Thus, 60 + 40 + 80 = 180 chocolate candies.
9. The selling price of a pair of rubber shoes is P1,250 which is marked down by 15%. What was the
original price?
Answer: P1,470.60
Solution: Selling Price (SP) = Original Price + Mark down price; SP = OP – OP x rate;
SP = OP x (1 – rate); OP = SP/(1 – rate) OP = P1,250 x (1 – 0.15); OP = 1,250 x 0.85;
OP = P1,470.60
10. Marilou sells a branded bag to Maricel at 15% profit. Maricel sells the same item to Michele at
20% profit. If Michele pays P6,624 for it, what is the price of the bag at which Maricel bought
the item?
Answer: P4,800.00
Solution: Let n be the cost price of Marilou; then, cost price of Maricel = 1.15n; cost price of
Michele = 1.2 x 1.15n = 1.38n; Cost price of Michele = P6,624; 1.38n = 6,624;
n = 6,624/1.38; n = P4,800.
