METHOD STATEMENT
FOR
Intumescent Fireproofing works at Dew point Control Unit Abqaiq..
USING
MATERIAL: JOTUN PAINTS – JOTUN STEELMASTER 1200WF
1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 This method statement shall provide FSN of minimum guidelines to carry out Intumescent
Fireproofing of Steel Structure for 2nd Industrial area, Dammam Project to ensure that the
work is carried out safely and in accordance with Project drawings and Project Specifications.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This Method of Statement covers the surface preparation and Intumescent fireproofing
application on Steel Structure using Intumescent Fireproofing coating.
3.0 MATERIALS
3.1 Jotun Steelmaster 1200WF, Manufactured by Jotun.
3.2 Jotun Hardtop XP
4.0 MANPOWER
4.1 Construction Manager shall be responsible for the supervision and implementation of this
method statement. Manpower under him will consist but not limited to the following:
4.1.1 Supervisor.
4.1.2 QC/QA Personnel.
4.1.3 Sprayer.
4.1.4 Helpers.
5.0 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
5.1 Tools and equipment shall be made available to support continuous work. Defective tools shall
be return to tool room to prevent from inadvertent use. Tools and equipment shall include but
not limited to as follows:
5.1.1 Airless spray machine
5.1.2 Air compressor
5.1.3 Paint rollers & tools.
6.0 Delivery of Material
6.1 Deliver approved materials to staging areas. Materials are to be in unopened packages
identifiable as per manufacturer and brand.
6.2 Material shall be stored above ground under cover until ready for use.
6.3 Product batch numbers to be recorded along with manufactured date.
7.2 Primed steel surfaces shall be fully cured as per Fireproofing manufacturer's
recommendations. Compatibility between the primer and fireproofing material should be
established prior to application.
7.3 Prior to application all adjacent areas not requiring fireproofing should be protected from
overspray. If needed. All clips, hangers, supports and other attachment required to
penetrate the fireproofing material shall be in place.
8.0 Mixing & Application
8.1 Jotun Steelmaster 1200WF is supplied ready for use and it should not be diluted. A small
amount of water is allowed to be added in order to mix the material.
8.2 Stir the Jotun Steelmaster 1200WF with an electric drill type mixer till it becomes homogenous
and free of lumps.
8.3 After mixing the material, it should be applied using airless spray machine, and for the small
areas/touch up work, brush or roller is acceptable.
8.4 To insure the correct thickness is being applied, frequent measurement to be taken using wet
film thickness gauge. To determine the approximate DFT multiply WFT by 0.69.
8.5 Take a dry thickness reading as soon as the coating is fully cured (minimum 2 days). An
collaborated meter to be used.
9.0 Repair Procedure
9.1 Damaged areas should be abraded back to a firm sound surface.
9.2 The surface should then be cleaned and dried before application of Jotun Steelmaster 1200WF.
9.3 If necessary, touch‐up the primer and allow to cure.
9.4 Apply Intumescent Fireproofing to the required wet film thickness and allow it to cure.
10.0 Safety
10.1 Safety to men and material shall be the highest priority. Safety measures shall be strictly
followed as detailed in the MSDS.
10.2 Proper housekeeping at the end of the day shall be assigned as mandatory jobs to workers to
avoid accidents due to littered tools and materials.
