MC: Today we have two students with us, Hương and Viên. They are
going to tell us about a survey they did on the role of women and men
in typical Vietnamese homes.
Hương: Our survey shows that in general women still do most of the
cleaning and cooking. In fact, many women don’t have an outside job.
Instead, they do housework and take care of the elderly.
MC: That’s interesting. What else did you learn Viên?
Viên: In general, in families where women work, the husband and
children are more likely to help out with housework.
MC: I see. And have things changed much over the years.
Viên: Well, things are changing but rather slowly. It’s more common in
cities for other family members to help out at home than it is in the rural
areas.
MC: I guess that is because it’s more common for mothers to work
outside the home in the cities.Viên: That’s right.
MC: Is there anything else you found that is interesting?
Viên: Most people agree that they should help out women more at
homes, but they don’t always do so.

always do it.

takes care of my grandmother.
MC: That’s interesting. Are things different at your home, Viên?
Viên: My mother works as a schoolteacher, so we all have to help her
out at home.
MC: I see. And how do you do that?
Viên: Well, nobody at my house is a very good cook except my mum.
So, she does all the cooking. And my dad and sister wash and iron the
clothes. They take turns.
MC: That sounds fair. And how do you help out?
Viên: My job is to take care of our dog. I feed and walk him. I also give
him a bath on Sundays.
MC: Great. It sounds like you all have something to do. Have these roles
changed much over the years?
