Chapter 1
For the past two years, Pandemic has been our greatest foe. We'd lost loved
ones, friends, and acquaintances, and some of us were even separated from our
families. This pandemic has a negative impact on our educational system, not just for
kids but also for our cherished instructors. The COVID-19 epidemic has wreaked
havoc on education systems throughout the world, affecting over 1.6 billion students
in over 200 nations. More than 94 percent of the world's student population has been
affected by school, institution, and other learning facility closures. This has resulted in
significant changes in every part of our life. Traditional educational procedures have
been substantially disrupted by social distancing and limited mobility regulations. The
reopening of schools once the restrictions have been lifted is another problem.
Most nations have closed schools, training institutes, and higher education
institutions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's lockdown and social distancing
efforts. Educators are delivering excellent education through numerous online
channels, which is causing a paradigm change. Despite the obstacles faced by both
educators and learners, online learning, remote learning, and continuing education
have proven a cure for this unprecedented worldwide pandemic. Transitioning from
traditional face-to-face learning to online learning may be a very different experience
for students and teachers, one that they must adjust to with few or no other options.
Educators and the school system have embraced "Education in Emergency" via
various online platforms and are being forced to adopt a system for which they are
unprepared.
Innately driven learners are largely affected in their learning since they require
supervision and direction such as pupils who are poor in their learning experience
challenges. Due to fewer contact hours for learners and a lack of interaction with
teachers when learning/understanding issues, students' academic performance is likely
to suffer in courses held for both year-end and internal examinations.
Aside from being enjoyable for the children, school time helps them develop social
skills and awareness. While children are away from their regular school schedule,
they face economic, social, and psychological consequences. Many of these kids are
now taking online classes and spending more time on virtual platforms, putting them
at risk of online abuse. . More families are relying on technology and digital solutions
to keep their children engaged in learning, entertained, and connected to the outside
world as a result of school closures and strict containment measures, but not all
children have the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to keep themselves safe
online.
Most nations throughout the world witnessed unprecedented entire or partial
lockdowns, forcing colleges and schools to close immediately. As a result, teachers
and students have to learn how to adjust to remote instruction right away. This is true
for teacher education as well. The need to rapidly adapt to new contexts of teaching
and learning online has revealed how teacher education institutions and teacher
educators encountered and experienced the challenges and opportunities to carry on
their job in such unexpected circumstances.
In this context, among other issues, it is important to look at how teacher education
has adapted to the restriction in interaction and moved to new ways of teaching and
learning in the preparation of future teachers for a world marked by uncertainty The
reality that has emerged as a result of the COVID-19 crisis raises questions about the
nature of teaching and how to support student teachers' learning, but it also challenges
teacher education to (re)think ways of (re)educating teachers for scenarios that are
unpredictable and unknown, but that raise issues of equity and social justice. The
COVID-19 epidemic and its consequences on teacher education are the focus of this
special issue. It comprises comments from writers from a range of backgrounds who
comprehensively reflect on the pandemic's repercussions and offer findings from
research focused on how the COVID-19 epidemic has influenced the work of teacher
educators and teachers.
3. As an Educator How can you add the “human touch” and maintain student retention
Through this study, the researchers believe that this can be used as a solution of the
problem in this topic. This research will benefit to the following:
Gogon High School Teachers - This can benefit the teachers because this can provide
opportunities for teachers to strengthen their subject-matter knowledge while learning
new research-based, student- centered instructional strategies.
Future researcher - Through this study, the future researchers may be able to use this
topic as their guide to create a new research that in which has similarities to this study.
Gogon High School - Through this study it can help the school organization identify
the problems encountered by its teaching staff and provide solutions for the
betterment of its teaching capabilities and school performance
Related literature
Sumitra Pokhrel, Roshan Chhetri, (2021) said that the Covid-19 have resulted in
suspension of face to face classes in several schools, colleges and universities .This
resulted in the need for innovative alternative teaching methods and assessment
strategies. Their article aims to provide a comprehensive report on the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on online teaching and learning of various papers and indicate
the way forward.
Carmen Carillo (2020) Said that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected education and
teacher education in particular, in various ways. As a result of the closure of
universities and schools, teachers and students had to rapidly adapt to remote
teaching. Teacher education is no exception. The need to create learning environments
for student teachers doing their teacher education preparation implied decisions,
choices and adaptations in order to meet not only the expectations of students but also
the requirements of teacher education as well as the conditions in which both
universities and schools had to operate.
Related studies
Allen et al., (2020) said that in terms of their professional life and work, teachers and
teacher educators are transiting through a particularly unsettled period. The rapid
moves to online modes of delivery in order to keep students in order to keep students
engaged in learning are the biggest challenge to both teachers and students.
Glutsch et al., (2020) said that teachers had to adapt to online instruction, which
required them to employ a variety of digital tools Digitalisation in schools has
recently attained prominence. A key argument relates to closing the ‘gap’ between
students’ conventional learning and development at school and ‘the experiences and
skills that our youth need to enter the information economy’ (Kozma 2011,):and
resources to solve issues and apply new teaching and learning strategies.
La Velle (2020) said that despite the unexpected switch to different mode of learning
the virtualization occurred just before the start of the school year and that the virtual
learning environments, material, teaching staff were already in place to continue the
education for the year
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The researcher conducted a qualitative research. Qualitative research is designed to
reveal a target audience’s range of behaviour and the perceptions that drive it with
reference to specific topics or issues. It uses in-depth studies of small groups of
people to guide and support the construction of hypotheses. The results of qualitative
research are descriptive rather than predictive.9
numerical data. Think of the word 'quality' when you think of qualitative data - you
are taking a deep, quality look at a phenomenon.10
The researchers found that qualitative design would best suit their study because
the respondents could better describe their experiences regarding the topic. Also, the
respondents could clearly express their perceptions while taking in-depth interview.
Research Instrument
Survey Questionnaires was used as an instrument for this study. The researcher
used this instrument so that the respondents would express their thoughts and feelings
completely towards the topic. In this way, the researcher may be able to find
conclusions flawlessly. Hard and soft copies were used by the researcher to
accommodate those who cannot answer through online or through written answers.
The data gathering process starts after the approval of the topic and the title
which is “The effects of Covid-19 to the selected teachers of Gogon High School”.
The researcher then gathered data after the approval of survey questionnaires
that serves as the main tool in gathering data, in which then it is given to the
respondents. All data gathered from the respondents will be observed with absolute
confidentiality. Lastly, the researcher would successfully accomplish in gathering data
by surveying the respondents. The final result of the survey will be subjected to the
researchers analysis and interpretation.
RESULTS
According to the findings of this research teachers finds it a big challenge for them
to teach amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. According ro them they have to adapt different
modalities to ensure that the teaching and learning process never stop and the need to
use modalities suited to the learning style of the learners has to adapt.
Positive results
The positive effect to the teachers is that they too learned different learning modality
aside from what they are used to during face-to-face classes. They learned new skills on
how to deliver their lesson especially using and involving technology like ICT when
conducting classes. Some of them have involved themselves with the different training,
seminars and workshops regarding the different teaching strategies they can use for
conducting class.
Negative Results
The negative effects based on their responses is that they experienced a lot of
difficulties especially on conducting online classes, some of the learners does not have
Wi-Fi and strong internet connection, without gadgets like cellular phone resulting to
some of the students not joining their online class and the lack of bond papers and ink
for printing the modules for their students that is supposed to fill the gap for those who
cannot attend their online classes.
DISCUSSION
The primary purpose of this study was to know the effects of the changes in
teaching and learning brought about by the Covid-19 Pandemic on the performance of
selected teachers of Gogon High School,. The researcher assumed the number of
respondents needed is ten (10) but due to the availability of some teachers the
researcher failed to at least have ten respondents that’s why the final number of
respondents are five (5) selected teachers of the school specifically the researcher
identified the changes in their teaching methods and how they apply it to their
students. The results shows the significant difference in views of effects of the
pandemic to their job as a teacher it was found that teachers both benefit and at the
same time challenged by the changes in learning and teaching this school year.
Recommendations
With the potential of this study toward finding the effects of the pandemic to our
teaching forces, the researcher recommends the following. (1) Choose the right
teaching tools and practice using them, (2) Ensure adequate supplies of teaching
materials, (3) Develop programs to train and improve teaching capabilities,(4) ensure
access to technology(5) Encourage participation, collaboration, and creativity.
