RESEARCH-BASED PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING & TEACHING STRATEGIES
LEARNING PRINCIPLES

The following principles are drawn from How Learning Works, a compendium of
current, well-supported research on what we know about learning. These principles
are applicable across all disciplines and learning contexts and are intended to
illuminate why certain approaches to teaching support student learning.

1. Students’ prior knowledge can help or hinder learning.

2. How students organize knowledge influences how they learn and apply what
they know.
3. Students’ motivation determines, directs, and sustains what they do to
learn.
4. To develop mastery, students must acquire component skills, practice
integrating them, and know when to apply what they have learned.
5. Goal-directed practice coupled with targeted feedback enhances the quality
of students’ learning.
A. Reviewing previous
lesson or presenting 6. Students’ current level of development interacts with the social, emotional,
the new lesson and intellectual climate of the course to impact learning.
7. To become self-directed learners, students must learn to monitor and adjust
their approaches to learning.

What is Interpersonal communication?

Interpersonal communication is the process of exchange of information, ideas,

information, in a form of voice, facial expressions, body language
and gestures
2. Presenting

the new lesson the effectiveness of transferring messages to others.

Interpersonal communication is also defined as communication that takes place

between people who are interdependent and have some knowledge of each other:
for example, communication between a son and his father, an employer and an

Examples:

Two friends talking about various topics

Two siblings recalling fond memories
Two passengers talking at the bus station
Two children teasing each other while in the playground
Two family members chatting while shopping at the mall

Ask:
1. What is the similarity in the given examples?
2. How many persons are there in the situation?

The most common form of interpersonal communication is dyadic communication.

Dyad means a pair or two individuals. It may be defined as a friendly and usual
informal talk between two people who exchange their views and ideas.

3. Is their conversation in a formal or informal way?

Conversation
Conversation is a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in
which news and ideas are exchanged (Oxford languages)

Dialog
A dialog is the most personal and most intimate form of dyadic communication.
In some ways, it is like a conversation, but dialog is more intimate and purposive, it
could be a written or spoken exchange of ideas between two or more people.

Examples of dialog:

 a student and his/her parent talking about school matter

 a husband and a wife talking about family finances
 Students chatting on the phone about their project
 Friends arguing on the merits of a movie
 principal comforting his teacher who has just lost his mother

Interview

made to obtain information from the interviewee.

An interview is conducted to get information from another person. Since it is done

at a scheduled time, it is important that the interviewer should
gather as much information about the topics that will be discussed
by the interviewee so he could prepare the appropriate kind of
questions.

Examples of interview:

for employment screening

creating stories
counselling
receiving complaints
and writing articles

Simply put, scaffolding is an instructional method that progressively moves students toward greater
independence and understanding during the learning process. Similar to how builders require scaffolding during
construction to access new heights, instructional scaffolding helps students navigate coursework and accomplish
tasks they otherwise might not have been able to. This idea is influenced by Vygotsky’s (1978) concept of the
zone of proximal development, which is based on three points of the learning process:

 What the learner cannot do

 What the learner can do with assistance
 What the learner can do unaided
