Lesson 5

System of Linear
equations
System of linear Equations
A System of linear Equations is solving two or more equations together.

To solve a system of linear equations means to find their point of

intersection

The solution of the system of equations above is (3,2)

1. Solving by Elimination

"Eliminate" means to remove: this method works by removing variables until there is just one left. The
idea is that we can do these:

We can multiply an equation by a constant (except zero),

We can add or subtract an equation to another equation

2. Solving by Substitution

Substitution means replacement, Replace one variable into the other equation.

3. Number of solutions
If a system of equations has

No solution Infinite solutions One solution

a1 b1 a1 b1 c 1 a1 b1
= = = ≠
a2 b2 a2 b2 c 2 a2 b2

Systems of linear equations word problems

Type 1 Questions : Choosing two or more equations that represent a scenario given

Solution

The 2 features here that the system of linear equations link between

are number of population and amount of money raised.

1st equation will be about total population

Number of males + Number of females = total population
X + Y = 2180

2nd equation will be about the money raised

Money raised by males + money raised by females = total raised
20x + 25y = 50,000

Answer is (B)

Type 2 Questions: It’s required to write and solve two equations obtained from a word problem
Solution

The two features we have here are Number of books and their cost
No. of hardcover books + No. of paperback books = total No. of books

h + p = 13 ------- (1)

Total cost of hardcovers + total cost of paperback = total cost of books

5h + 1P = 45 ------- (2)

By using use elimination,

h=8&p=5

How many more ? 8 – 5 = 3 Answer is (D)
