CLINICAL SCENARIO:
A 19-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of
dengue fever. During my nursing shift, I observed that the patient had an elevated
temperature. To address this, I decided to perform a tepid sponge bath as a part of the fever
management protocol. While providing care, I took the opportunity to educate the patient,
mentioning that oral rehydration therapy is recommended for patients with moderate
dehydration caused by high fever and vomiting.

SCENARIO
1. How was knowledge acquired? Information on dengue, symptoms, and
fever management.
Prior experience with patients with similar
conditions.
Knowledge of ethical principles and patient
rights.
Knowledge of ethical principles and patient
rights.

2. How knowledge was processed? Evaluation of patient history, vital signs,

and symptoms
Assessment of the patient's response to
interventions
Consideration of patient autonomy and
informed consent
Interpretation of the patient's comfort level
and distress
Analyzing the holistic picture of the
patient's condition
3. How was knowledge generated? Application of tepid sponge bath for fever
management
Recognizing individual patient preferences
and comfort
Ensuring patient understanding and
agreement with the fever management plan
Formulation of a comprehensive fever
management plan
4. How knowledge was disseminated? Communication with the healthcare team
about the intervention
Sharing insights with colleagues during
handover
Open communication with the patient
regarding the intervention
Collaborative care planning with the
healthcare team
5. How was feedback used and its effect? Continuous monitoring of temperature and
symptoms for effectiveness.
Incorporating feedback from colleagues into
future fever management.
Addressing any ethical concerns raised by
the patient or colleagues.
Iterative refinement of the fever
management plan based on feedback and
outcomes.

1. Strengths and Weaknesses of the Foundation of Knowledge Model

In the context of the scenario involving a 19-year-old patient with dengue, the model's
strength lies in its ability to blend medical knowledge, personal experience, ethical principles,
and aesthetic considerations. This holistic approach enables healthcare professionals to
formulate well-rounded care plans. However, the subjectivity in personal and aesthetic
knowledge, such as patient preferences, may introduce variability among healthcare
providers. Additionally, the model's comprehensive nature could be challenging to implement
quickly in fast-paced clinical environments.

2. How the Model Can Improve Patient Care

By employing the Foundation of Knowledge Model, healthcare professionals can

offer more individualized care to dengue patients. Integrating empirical knowledge about the
disease, personal experience in fever management, ethical considerations in patient
communication, and aesthetic awareness of patient comfort can lead to a more tailored and
effective care plan. The model's emphasis on collaboration ensures that insights from
different perspectives contribute to comprehensive decision-making, ultimately benefiting
patient outcomes.

3. Ethical Considerations of Using this Model

In the given scenario, ethical considerations are pivotal. The model underscores the
importance of informed consent and respecting patient autonomy, which is crucial when
introducing interventions like the tepid sponge bath. Healthcare professionals need to ensure
open communication, addressing any ethical concerns raised by the patient or colleagues.
Aesthetic knowledge, acknowledging patient comfort, adds an ethical dimension, requiring
cultural sensitivity. Privacy concerns emerge when disseminating patient information,
demanding a delicate balance between sharing knowledge for collaborative care
and maintaining confidentiality. Navigating these ethical considerations ensures patient-
centered and ethically sound care.
