What is a computer
Nowadays, computers are everywhere and we are using them for a variety of tasks.
There are various types of computers that have changed how we live in many ways.
Parts of a computer
A computer consists of many hardware components. Although there are various types
of computers, all computers contain a similar set of hardware parts. Each of these
hardware parts helps us use and interact with the computer in some way.
Base unit – holds the brain of the computer, CPU, motherboard, hard disk and memory units headphone
and printer
There are many operating systems provided by many companies in the world. Each
operating system is designed to work on specific types of devices. For example:
Organize windows
Work with windows
As you use an operating system, you will often be working with many different things at
once. The operating system keeps different activities in different views, called
"windows."
Virtual assistants use AI or artificial intelligence to learn more about you, so they
become more helpful the more you continue to use them. You can use virtual assistants
on your desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone or other supported devices such as smart
speakers. To make interactions easier, you can often interact with virtual assistants using
voice commands.
Personalize your desktop
There are many features and settings that you can customize within your operating
system based on your preferences. These personalizations can make it easier for you to
get things done on your computer.
Introduction
Applications, also known as apps, are software programs that we can use to get things
done on our computers. Every day, new applications are developed to solve new
problems around the world.
What is an application
Applications are software programs that help us get things done on our computers.
Every app is developed to help you get something done on your computer - like
performing a calculation, editing a photo, or sending a message. There are many
applications for you to choose from for different purposes.
Introduction
Computers are built with the hardware that is necessary for the computer to operate at
a basic level. However, there are times when you might want to add functionality to your
computer by connecting an external device.
These types of devices are called peripheral devices. They add functionality to your
computer by providing input functions and/or output functions. An example of an
input device is a keyboard, which allows a user to type information, or a scanner, which
allows a user to scan a photo into the computer. An example of an output device is a
speaker that outputs sound from the computer to the user, or a monitor, which outputs
visual information to the user.
Bluetooth devices
With modern technology, we can connect peripheral devices to our computers without
using cables. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that makes this possible. If a device is
Bluetooth-enabled, you can connect it to a Bluetooth-enabled computer with the press
of a button.
Using Bluetooth, you can connect wireless headphones to your computer and listen to
music without plugging anything in, or connect a keyboard to your computer without
any cables. You can even connect both via Bluetooth at the same time.
Many laptops and tablets have Bluetooth support built-in. If you're using a computer
that doesn't have Bluetooth, you can plug a separate USB Bluetooth adapter into the
USB port to enable Bluetooth.
What is Wi-Fi?
The involvement of internet in our day-to-day activities is getting
bigger and bigger as time goes by. We now use internet in almost all
of the things we do. From education, entertainment, communication
and more. There are multiple technologies involved in the way we
connect to the internet. One of which is commonly known as Wi-Fi.
In this lesson, you will learn the fundamental concepts about Wi-Fi
including its use, starting from transmission to and connection.
Digital Insight
Using the internet safely and responsibly requires you to be a
responsible internet citizen or "netizen,". This means being able to act
accordingly according to the basics of internet etiquette.
In this lesson, you will learn the basic etiquette of using the internet
including the ways of minimizing excessive and harmful use of the
internet. This lesson will also show you how to secure your online
accounts and deal with cyberbullying.
Digital Discernment
The internet contains a lot of information about different subjects. The
internet also allows you to share these information to different people
in different areas. For this reason, you must be able to determine the
credibility of information you see online.
In In this lesson, you will learn how to evaluate and identify illegitimate
images, videos, and online sources that could harm an individual. You
will also know the different concepts of online misinformation and the
different ways of addressing this concern properly.
LESSON 3: Digital Impact
Digital Impact
Similar with the physical world, your activities in the online or internet
space may affect other users. As a responsible internet user, you
must be able to determine and ensure that your online activities will
impact others positively.
In this lesson, you will learn the effects that your online activities may
have to others. You will also know how the digital world identifies you
through your digital footprint.
Digital Ambition
Living in the "new normal" requires an additional set of knowledge,
and skills. This include Digital Literacy, and Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (STEM) skills.
In this lesson, you will learn more about the significance of these skills
and how these may help in your smooth transition to the new normal
way of living.
You should be aware of these scams so that you can do your best to avoid
them. Phishing is a common online scam that you should be aware of.
Communicate safely online
Communicate safely online
The internet allows us to communicate with other people in new ways. However, it isn't
always safe to communicate with other people online. You don't always know for sure
who you're talking to when you're on the internet, so you have to be careful to stay safe.
You should think about your digital footprint when you share information or do things
online because things that happen online are difficult to erase.
Describe best practices for using
information found on the web
Use information responsibly
Although accessing information is easy in the digital world, there are some rules to keep
in mind when you want to use information you find online.
Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that takes place over the internet. It can be easy to
send mean messages or spread negative rumors about other people, but this can be
dangerous for the person who is targeted.
In this learning path, you will be introduced to Microsoft Office. You will learn how to
perform the basic functions in Microsoft Word. You will learn how to interact with text,
pictures, lists and other types of objects. You will also deal with PDF files.
Microsoft Office is a package of software applications that makes it easy for you to be
productive as you accomplish everyday tasks on your computer. In this lesson, you will
be introduced to Microsoft Office and learn how you can use it for productivity in your
daily work and personal activities.
Why Office?
Introduction to Microsoft Office
The Microsoft mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet
to achieve more. Microsoft Office was created to help people be more productive and
achieve more every day.
Microsoft Office includes popular productivity apps like Word for working with
documents, Excel for working with spreadsheets, PowerPoint for working with
presentations, Outlook for email, and more.
There are several ways to access and use the Office apps.
When saving a file, you will need to name the file and choose a location for the file. You
may save your document to your computer, or you can use Word to save your
document to OneDrive to access it online and from other devices.
Microsoft Word is fundamentally a word processing program, which means it's designed to
allow you to create, edit, and format text-based documents.
Microsoft Word is designed as a word-processing program, but it's not limited to text.
You can also add objects like shapes, charts, pictures, and tables to your Word
documents.
Add shapes
Sometimes the best way to get your point across is to draw it. You can use shapes to
create graphics in your document, and format their properties to customize as needed.
Tips
To create a perfect square or circle, press and hold the Shift key while you drag.
To resize the shape, drag one of the control handles on the corners or sides.
To rotate it, drag the rotation handle at the top.
To change other parts of some shapes, drag a yellow control handle.
To add text to your shape, just select it and start typing.
Format shapes
Add WordArt
With Microsoft Word, you can add a creative touch to your document using WordArt.
This feature allows you to add special effects like shading and outlines to your text.
Add pictures
You'll often need to include images in your document. You can insert images into your
document from your computer or the web, and resize and reposition as needed.
Add tables
Tables are a great way to present information in an organized way. There are several
ways to insert tables into a document in Microsoft Word.
You can do a lot with Microsoft Word when you know how to add and edit text, and
insert and format objects. There are several additional features of Microsoft Word that
can make it easier to create digital content.
Write an equation
Equations are written in a specific formula different from the regular text. MS Word
helps you to write equations in an easy way.
By default when you create a document in Word, it will be saved as a Word document
with the extension .doc or .docx. Text documents can also be saved as view-only files
using the PDF file type.
Communicating Online
There are many ways to stay in touch with others using the internet. One of the most
popular methods of communicating with others online is using email, or electronic mail.
Intro to email
Email is a web service that allows you to communicate with friends, family, and others
online. Email allows you to send and receive mail electronically using the internet.
1. Choose a provider, such as Outlook, Gmail, or Yahoo. You can create an account with an
email provider for free.
2. Create an email address: This is the address other people will use to send mail to you.
You choose your own email address as long as it's not taken by someone else. It's usually
a good idea to clearly use your name in your email address so that others know who
they're communicating with.
3. Create an account: You'll be asked for basic personal info. You'll also set up a password
so no one else can access your mail.
4. Sign in: Your email account is a private mailbox that only you can access. You need to
remember your password and sign in when you want to view your inbox or send mail.
These steps are generally the same regardless of which email provider you choose.
Email basics
Once you have created an account with an email provider and you have an email
address, you're ready to communicate using email. You will simply need to log into your
account to access your inbox and send and receive emails. You can access your email
using your phone or computer as long as you have an internet connection.
No matter which email provider you use, there are many features that most modern
email applications have in common. These features may look slightly different
depending on which provider you use, but you will use email in the same way in any
case.
The internet and the web make it possible for us to stay in touch with others near and
far. There are apps and services that make it easy to communicate with others online
through instant messaging (IM), voice calling, and video calling.
Intro to instant messaging, voice calling, and video calling
There are many ways to stay in touch with friends, family, and others online. You'll likely
use different tools in different situations. For example, email is usually used in
professional or formal scenarios, such as with a business client or with your professor.
There are other useful tools. Instant messaging (IM) is a way to chat with someone in
real time, as if you're in a live conversation. Online voice calling (VOIP) allows you to
make calls to other online users or phone numbers, all without using a landline or
cellular network. With video calling, you can use a web camera to see the person you're
talking to on the screen.
Throughout this lesson, we will use the Skype for Business app in demonstrations, but
you can use Skype in similar ways to send instant messages and conduct voice and
video calls online.
Add contacts
You can't really communicate online without having people to communicate with. After
setting up your Skype account, add contacts to connect with people you'll talk to online.
Chat basics
Staying in touch with others is quick and easy with communication services like Skype
and Skype for Business. With these types of services, you can usually check your
contacts' status or presence indicators to know if they are online or away. When
someone is online, you can quickly send an instant message or IM and have an
interactive online conversation.
Make a call
You can use online communication services like Skype and Skype for Business to make
voice and video calls using the internet. Skype allows you to call someone using their
phone number, or using their contact profile in the Skype directory.
Collaborating and Managing Contents
In this learning path, you will be introduced to the cloud services like OneDrive and how to
apply their basic functions. You will also learn how to collaborate with others on Word
documents. In addition, you will learn how to use Microsoft Outlook to manage your tasks, time
and contacts.
Thanks to the internet, we can store information from one device and access it using
another, almost instantly. The cloud is a collection of software services that run across
the world using the internet, instead of running on a single user's computer.
Storing content in the cloud makes it easier to access our information from anywhere,
instead of storing it locally, or only on our computer.
Share a document
With Microsoft Word you can share your documents with other people so they can view,
share comments, or coauthor a document with you.
Add comments
When you are working on a document with your team, you don't need to have a
meeting to share notes or comments. With Microsoft Word, you and your team
members can add comments directly to the document for everyone to review.
Digital calendars are a great way to keep track of meetings and tasks on your own or with the
people you work with.
Add a contact
Keep track of everyone you communicate with by creating and editing contacts in
Outlook. Once you've saved someone as a contact, you can type the first few letters of
their name into an email, and Outlook will fill in the email address for you.
Get connected
The internet makes many things possible for us, from communication to learning, to
entertainment. We'll learn more about what the internet is and how to connect to it in this
lesson.
One of the most popular uses of the Internet is the World Wide Web, also referred to
as the web. Many people use the terms internet and web to refer to the same thing, but
they are different from one another.
The World Wide Web, known as the web, is a system that allows us to find information,
publish content, and get things done using the internet.
There are various web browsers on the market to choose from. Some of the most
popular are Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. We'll use the Microsoft
Edge browser for demos in this course, but you'll be able to use other modern browsers
in mostly the same way.
The web is made up of a massive collection of information across over a billion websites.
That's a lot of information to work with!
You will often need to find information online without knowing the website or
URL. Search engines solve this problem and allow you to search through large
collections of content to find what you are looking for.
There are a variety of search engines available, but you can use all web search engines in
the same way.
Search tips
Search engines search through millions of webpages and often provide you with
thousands of results that match your search. It can be difficult to browse through a large
number of results to find the type of content you are looking for.
Search engines do their best to provide you with results that seem most useful to you,
but they can't always predict what you're looking for.
There are some techniques you can use to help the search engine provide you with
results that are relevant, so that you don't waste time looking through webpages that
don't match what you're looking for.
Evaluate online information
As you browse through search results and content on the web, it's important to be
aware of the types of content you might come across. Anyone can create content on the
web, so you can't trust everything you come across.
Once you navigate to a webpage to look for information, you should be critical in
evaluating the accuracy and credibility of the content.
Information is credible if you can trust the source that published the content.
Evaluate media
There are various types of media that many of us come across on a daily basis. From
newspapers to magazines to web articles, information and messages are all around us.
It's important that we learn to evaluate these messages carefully before taking things to
be true.
