What is a computer
Nowadays, computers are everywhere and we are using them for a variety of tasks.
There are various types of computers that have changed how we live in many ways.

Parts of a computer
A computer consists of many hardware components. Although there are various types
of computers, all computers contain a similar set of hardware parts. Each of these
hardware parts helps us use and interact with the computer in some way.

Types of personal computers

Computers come in many shapes and sizes. Each type has its own advantages and
disadvantages that make it suitable for certain uses and scenarios.

What is an operating system?

The operating system is the conductor of the computer. It coordinates the software and
hardware parts of the computer, making sure all of the different components work
together to get things done.

There are many operating systems provided by many companies in the world. Each
operating system is designed to work on specific types of devices. For example:

 Windows is designed by Microsoft. It is a family of operating systems that can run on a

variety of PCs and laptops. We will use the Windows 10 version of this operating system
for demos in this course.
 MacOS is designed by Apple Inc. and works on Apple's Macintosh computers like the
MacBook.
 iOS is designed by Apple Inc. and works on Apple's mobile devices like iPhone, iPod, and
iPad devices.
 Android OS is designed by Google and works mainly on touchscreen mobile devices like
smartphones and tablets.
 Google Chrome OS is designed by Google and works on Chromebook devices.
Work with files and folders
Operating systems are designed to help us work in ways that we're used to. Just as we
work with physical documents, we can create files and folders to store information on a
computer.

Use the right-click to access system features

Understand the right-click
Computer hardware and software work together to help us use the computer effectively.
One example of this is the mouse and the operating system. We use the primary left-
click button of the mouse to perform most operations on the computer. The right-click
button has helpful functions that help us access additional features of our software.

Organize windows
Work with windows
As you use an operating system, you will often be working with many different things at
once. The operating system keeps different activities in different views, called
"windows."

Interact with a virtual assistant to complete
basic tasks
Use virtual assistants—Cortana
Virtual assistants are digital services that help you to perform tasks on your computer,
like setting reminders, checking the weather, and searching the web. Virtual assistants
are built into the operating systems of many modern devices. Some of the most popular
virtual assistants are Microsoft Cortana, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant.

Virtual assistants use AI or artificial intelligence to learn more about you, so they
become more helpful the more you continue to use them. You can use virtual assistants
on your desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone or other supported devices such as smart
speakers. To make interactions easier, you can often interact with virtual assistants using
voice commands.
Personalize your desktop
There are many features and settings that you can customize within your operating
system based on your preferences. These personalizations can make it easier for you to
get things done on your computer.

new apps.

Introduction
Computers are built with the hardware that is necessary for the computer to operate at
a basic level. However, there are times when you might want to add functionality to your
computer by connecting an external device.

These types of devices are called peripheral devices. They add functionality to your
computer by providing input functions and/or output functions. An example of an
input device is a keyboard, which allows a user to type information, or a scanner, which
allows a user to scan a photo into the computer. An example of an output device is a
speaker that outputs sound from the computer to the user, or a monitor, which outputs
visual information to the user.

Describe types of peripheral devices and

their uses
Portable storage devices
Sometimes you need to enhance the storage abilities of your computer. You can
connect portable storage devices like USB drives and external hard drives to your
computer for additional storage. These devices also make it easy to transfer files from
one device to another.

Bluetooth devices
With modern technology, we can connect peripheral devices to our computers without
using cables. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that makes this possible. If a device is
Bluetooth-enabled, you can connect it to a Bluetooth-enabled computer with the press
of a button.
Using Bluetooth, you can connect wireless headphones to your computer and listen to
music without plugging anything in, or connect a keyboard to your computer without
any cables. You can even connect both via Bluetooth at the same time.

Many laptops and tablets have Bluetooth support built-in. If you're using a computer
that doesn't have Bluetooth, you can plug a separate USB Bluetooth adapter into the
USB port to enable Bluetooth.

Introduction to Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is considered a word-processing app. The features of Word can help
you author text-based documents like letters, resumes, research papers, and more. You
can then save, print, email, or share your documents in a variety of ways.

Create a document in Word

Create a document
The first step to working with documents in Microsoft Word is to create a document.
You can start with a blank document, or use one of the many templates included with
Office to create documents like resumes, flyers, and more.

Save a document in Word

Save a document
Once you add text and other content to your document, you will need to save the
document so you don't lose your changes.

When saving a file, you will need to name the file and choose a location for the file. You
may save your document to your computer, or you can use Word to save your
document to OneDrive to access it online and from other devices.

Print a document in Word

Print a document
Sometimes you will need to have a physical copy of a document you create in Word.
You can print documents from Word to have physical copies and share with others.

Microsoft Word is fundamentally a word processing program, which means it's designed to
allow you to create, edit, and format text-based documents.

Add and format text

Once you have a document created, you can start adding text and formatting it to
control how it appears on the page. Office includes features that allow you to change
font types, font colors, font sizes, and even apply font styles like bold, italic, and
underline to your text.

Check text spelling and grammar

To ensure your documents are professional, you should always check the spelling and
grammar of the text you write. Microsoft Word makes it easy to do this.

Find and replace text

Find and replace lets you locate a word or a phrase and replace it with new text. This
feature can save a lot of your time while you are working, especially if you are working
in a large document.
Add and format lists
One way to organize your text and make it easier to read is to use lists. Word has
features that help you create and format lists.

Microsoft Word is designed as a word-processing program, but it's not limited to text.
You can also add objects like shapes, charts, pictures, and tables to your Word
documents.

Add shapes
Sometimes the best way to get your point across is to draw it. You can use shapes to
create graphics in your document, and format their properties to customize as needed.

Tips

 To create a perfect square or circle, press and hold the Shift key while you drag.
 To resize the shape, drag one of the control handles on the corners or sides.
 To rotate it, drag the rotation handle at the top.
 To change other parts of some shapes, drag a yellow control handle.
 To add text to your shape, just select it and start typing.
Format shapes
Add WordArt
With Microsoft Word, you can add a creative touch to your document using WordArt.
This feature allows you to add special effects like shading and outlines to your text.

Add pictures
You'll often need to include images in your document. You can insert images into your
document from your computer or the web, and resize and reposition as needed.

Add tables
Tables are a great way to present information in an organized way. There are several
ways to insert tables into a document in Microsoft Word.

You can do a lot with Microsoft Word when you know how to add and edit text, and
insert and format objects. There are several additional features of Microsoft Word that
can make it easier to create digital content.

Add page numbers

With Microsoft Word, you can add page numbers to your document using a variety of
styles.
Apply themes to documents
You can apply a theme to quickly format an entire document with a specific style. There
are a variety of themes to choose from in Microsoft Word. These can save you a lot of
time so you don't have to format the styles of your document manually.

Use Tell Me to do anything in Office

Sometimes, you might forget which feature you need to use in Microsoft Word. The Tell
Me feature helps you get things done faster by helping you find the features you need
to use.

Write an equation
Equations are written in a specific formula different from the regular text. MS Word
helps you to write equations in an easy way.

By default when you create a document in Word, it will be saved as a Word document
with the extension .doc or .docx. Text documents can also be saved as view-only files
using the PDF file type.

Work with PDF files

PDF is a view-only file format. That means you can't make changes to a file while it's
saved in the PDF format. It is a good idea to save documents as PDF files when they are
complete and you do not anticipate them being edited by anyone else. For example,
handouts and flyers are also saved as PDFs because they can easily be shared with
others and printed.

Edit a PDF file

To edit a PDF file, you need first to convert it to a Word document. From there, you can
make changes to the document and save it as a new PDF file.

Communicating Online
There are many ways to stay in touch with others using the internet. One of the most
popular methods of communicating with others online is using email, or electronic mail.

Intro to email
Email is a web service that allows you to communicate with friends, family, and others
online. Email allows you to send and receive mail electronically using the internet.

Sign up for email

To send and receive emails, you first need to sign up for an email account. Many email
providers allow you to create an account for free. Once you sign up, you'll have your
own private online mailbox for sending and receiving mail.
To create an email account, you'll need to:

1. Choose a provider, such as Outlook, Gmail, or Yahoo. You can create an account with an
email provider for free.
2. Create an email address: This is the address other people will use to send mail to you.
You choose your own email address as long as it's not taken by someone else. It's usually
a good idea to clearly use your name in your email address so that others know who
they're communicating with.
3. Create an account: You'll be asked for basic personal info. You'll also set up a password
so no one else can access your mail.
4. Sign in: Your email account is a private mailbox that only you can access. You need to
remember your password and sign in when you want to view your inbox or send mail.
These steps are generally the same regardless of which email provider you choose.

Email basics
Once you have created an account with an email provider and you have an email
address, you're ready to communicate using email. You will simply need to log into your
account to access your inbox and send and receive emails. You can access your email
using your phone or computer as long as you have an internet connection.

No matter which email provider you use, there are many features that most modern
email applications have in common. These features may look slightly different
depending on which provider you use, but you will use email in the same way in any
case.

Compose and send an email

Sending a message to someone is quick and simple using email. You can write and
format your message, include other types of content like videos or images, choose who
will receive your message, and send the message instantly.

Read and reply to email

Any emails you receive from others will be displayed in your inbox. From your inbox,
you can select a message to open and read. You may then choose to reply to the person
who sent you the message, forward the message to someone else, delete the message,
and more.

The internet and the web make it possible for us to stay in touch with others near and
far. There are apps and services that make it easy to communicate with others online
through instant messaging (IM), voice calling, and video calling.
Intro to instant messaging, voice calling, and video calling
There are many ways to stay in touch with friends, family, and others online. You'll likely
use different tools in different situations. For example, email is usually used in
professional or formal scenarios, such as with a business client or with your professor.

There are other useful tools. Instant messaging (IM) is a way to chat with someone in
real time, as if you're in a live conversation. Online voice calling (VOIP) allows you to
make calls to other online users or phone numbers, all without using a landline or
cellular network. With video calling, you can use a web camera to see the person you're
talking to on the screen.

Sign in and out

To use Skype, you must first log into your account. Skype for Business is available to
Office 365 users with business, school, and work accounts. For personal use, you can use
the Skype app, which is available for free through Office. Skype can also be used online.

Throughout this lesson, we will use the Skype for Business app in demonstrations, but
you can use Skype in similar ways to send instant messages and conduct voice and
video calls online.

Add contacts
You can't really communicate online without having people to communicate with. After
setting up your Skype account, add contacts to connect with people you'll talk to online.

Set up audio and video

Before you start using Skype or Skype for Business to make calls, you should make sure
your audio and video are set up properly so others can hear or see you

Chat basics
Staying in touch with others is quick and easy with communication services like Skype
and Skype for Business. With these types of services, you can usually check your
contacts' status or presence indicators to know if they are online or away. When
someone is online, you can quickly send an instant message or IM and have an
interactive online conversation.

Make a call
You can use online communication services like Skype and Skype for Business to make
voice and video calls using the internet. Skype allows you to call someone using their
phone number, or using their contact profile in the Skype directory.
Collaborating and Managing Contents

In this learning path, you will be introduced to the cloud services like OneDrive and how to
apply their basic functions. You will also learn how to collaborate with others on Word
documents. In addition, you will learn how to use Microsoft Outlook to manage your tasks, time
and contacts.

Thanks to the internet, we can store information from one device and access it using
another, almost instantly. The cloud is a collection of software services that run across
the world using the internet, instead of running on a single user's computer.

Storing content in the cloud makes it easier to access our information from anywhere,
instead of storing it locally, or only on our computer.

Why use the cloud?

Cloud services, like Microsoft OneDrive, help you store your files online, access them
from any device, and share them with others.

Getting started with OneDrive

OneDrive helps you store and manage your files in the cloud from any device.

share comments, or coauthor a document with you.

Collaborate on Word documents

Collaboration on documents is a great feature of using Microsoft Word. When you're
working on a Word document with other people, you can coauthor the document, or
contribute to it at the same time from different devices.

Add comments
When you are working on a document with your team, you don't need to have a
meeting to share notes or comments. With Microsoft Word, you and your team
members can add comments directly to the document for everyone to review.

Track changes in a Word document

A great way to discuss changes to a document is to show them. Using the Track
Changes feature of Word, you can make changes to a document and your teammate
will be able to see exactly what you did.

Accept tracked changes

When someone sends you a Word document that includes tracked changes, you can
use Word features to quickly accept or reject the proposed changes.
Manage time with a digital calendar

Digital calendars are a great way to keep track of meetings and tasks on your own or with the
people you work with.

Meet Outlook calendar

Outlook calendar helps you keep track of your appointments and meetings.

Create appointments and meetings

You can use Outlook to keep track of your personal appointments or schedule meetings
with other people.

keep track of your contacts and manage your tasks in an organized way.

Add a contact
Keep track of everyone you communicate with by creating and editing contacts in
Outlook. Once you've saved someone as a contact, you can type the first few letters of
their name into an email, and Outlook will fill in the email address for you.

Create contact groups

If you often email a group of people, create a contact group in Outlook so you only
need to email that contact group instead of entering individual emails.

Create tasks and to-do lists

Many times, we have a lot of things that we need to do each day. By creating to-do lists
and tasks, we can stay organized and make sure we don't forget an important task.
Outlook has tools to help you create tasks and lists to stay organized in work and life.
Accessing Information Online

Get connected
The internet makes many things possible for us, from communication to learning, to
entertainment. We'll learn more about what the internet is and how to connect to it in this
lesson.

What is the internet?

The internet connects people across the world to one another, through a massive
global network of computers and devices. With the internet you can communicate with
people across the world, access and share information.

Connect to the internet

To access information and communicate with others using the internet, you'll first need
to connect to the internet—or "go online". There are several ways to connect to the
internet, including both wireless and wired connections.

Connect to a wireless network

You may often need to connect a portable device to the internet when you're on-the-go
or in a temporary location. You can connect to the internet wirelessly using Wi-Fi.

One of the most popular uses of the Internet is the World Wide Web, also referred to
as the web. Many people use the terms internet and web to refer to the same thing, but
they are different from one another.

The World Wide Web

The internet is the network that connects devices to one another across the world. This
connectivity makes many things possible, and one of them is the web.

The World Wide Web, known as the web, is a system that allows us to find information,
publish content, and get things done using the internet.

Browse the web

Web browsers are the tools that allow us to access and interact with content on the
web. Web browsers are apps, meaning that you can install them on your computer or
phone.

There are various web browsers on the market to choose from. Some of the most
popular are Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. We'll use the Microsoft
Edge browser for demos in this course, but you'll be able to use other modern browsers
in mostly the same way.

Online shopping tips

There are many things we can do online, including e-commerce transactions. The web
allows us to make purchases and conduct online transactions from our computers
almost instantly.

Search the web

The web is made up of a massive collection of information across over a billion websites.
That's a lot of information to work with!

You will often need to find information online without knowing the website or
URL. Search engines solve this problem and allow you to search through large
collections of content to find what you are looking for.

Use a search engine

Search engines are powerful tools that make it easy to find information online. These
software web applications look through the millions of websites on the web to find
specific content for you.

There are a variety of search engines available, but you can use all web search engines in
the same way.

Search tips
Search engines search through millions of webpages and often provide you with
thousands of results that match your search. It can be difficult to browse through a large
number of results to find the type of content you are looking for.

Search engines do their best to provide you with results that seem most useful to you,
but they can't always predict what you're looking for.

There are some techniques you can use to help the search engine provide you with
results that are relevant, so that you don't waste time looking through webpages that
don't match what you're looking for.
Evaluate online information
As you browse through search results and content on the web, it's important to be
aware of the types of content you might come across. Anyone can create content on the
web, so you can't trust everything you come across.

Once you navigate to a webpage to look for information, you should be critical in
evaluating the accuracy and credibility of the content.

Information is accurate if you can verify that it is true.

Information is credible if you can trust the source that published the content.

Evaluate media
There are various types of media that many of us come across on a daily basis. From
newspapers to magazines to web articles, information and messages are all around us.
It's important that we learn to evaluate these messages carefully before taking things to
be true.
