Membrane Filtration
Introduction and background
Membrane Filtration
Basics

• Membrane filtration has been known and accepted

technology at many industrial areas for decades.
Breweries, dairies, pharmaceutical, etc.

• Relatively new at pulp and paper industry

• Main purpose is usually purification of water (OptiCycle W

and R) or recovery of raw materials (OptiCycle C)

Membrane Filtration
Basics

• Fractions
- Permeate (filtrate, accept): fraction, that penetrates membrane
- Concentrate (retentate, reject): fraction, that doesn’t penetrate membrane

Membrane Filtration
Basics

• “Driving Force” = Pressure

- Pressure difference over the membrane (transmembrane pressure)
i.e. difference between concentrate and permeate pressure
- Tighter membrane needs higher dP
- With same membrane higher dP gives better capacity but increases
clogging
• Cross Flow (turbulence and fluid flow velocity) is the main key for
successful filtration
- Prevents particles from penetrating membranes pores
• Amount of permeate = Flux
- Common unit [l/m²h] : water amount in litres, that passes 1 square
meter of membrane in 1 hour
- Tool to compare techniques and for dimensioning of the system

Cross Flow Membrane Filtration
• Membrane filtration is based on Continuous Cross Flow Filtration
- Flow is cross direction of the membrane - not towards
- Higher the cross flow velocity, the better turbulence and permeate capacity
- Cross Flow usually created with flow velocity, typically 3-5 m/s
- In OptiFilter CR Cross Flow is created with rotors, > 10 m/s

OptiFilter CR
Requirements

• The filter can not function as such alone. It needs around it a

process with different kind of additional equipment such as piping,
tanks, pumps, valves, instruments and automation system.
• Process is usually fully automated
• Functioning of the filter is controlled using sequences
• Sequences of an individual filter are normally
- Start (process water filtration)
- Stop (rinsing with clean water)
- Washing (with chemicals)

OptiFilter CR
Requirements
• “Mechanical” white water for OptiCycle W
- Disc filter cloudy or clear filtrate, 20-200 ppm fibres
- DAF-filtrate contains residual polymers which have tendency to
attach on the membrane and clog it
• Pretreatment
- Pressure screen, bow screen, vibrating screen, sedimentation
- Removes big and harmful particles
- Typically min. 100 µm or 0,2 mm hole screening
• Regular chemical washing
- Minimum once a week
- Alkalic and acid washing
- Prevents membranes of permanent clogging
• Heating of washing water
- 55-60 °C, optimization of washing process
• The best for membranes is continuous running
