EXPERIENCE SUMMER | 1
THE GREEN KALAHARI WELCOMES YOU
Executive Mayor Foreword
Tourism is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in
South Africa and in particular in the ZF Mgcawu District
Municipal Area. Tourism is considered as a means to
empower previously disadvantaged communities
through skills and entrepreneurial development and the
creation of sustainable businesses.

The aim of this brochure is to showcase the numerous

tourism attractions in the area to encourage visitors to
our district. But more importantly, we hope that our
destination marketing activities will boost employment
in the tourism sector as well as grow the number of
tourism products owned by previously disadvantaged
entrepreneurs.
CLLR MARYNA BASSON
Let me take this opportunity to officially welcome you to THE HONOURABLE MAYOR
ZFM DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY
the ZFM District also known as the Green Kalahari region
of the Northern Cape Province. You have entered a land
of contrasts where the beauty of the landscape, the culture of the people, the abundance of
wildlife and the rich history of places such as Augrabies and Riemvasmaak combine to create
one of South Africa’s prime tourism and adventure destinations.

Your journey through the Green Kalarahi will offer a feast for the senses; meeting the locals,
tasting the local produce, wine tasting at any one of the numerous fine wine cellars, buying
handmade arts and crafts to challenging 4x4 trails, kayaking on the mighty Orange River,
hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, birdwatching, dune surfing, game viewing, game walks
and drives .…the outdoor options to include on your itinerary are endless.

With the increased cost of travel, the ZF Mgcawu District is strategically placed and easily
accessible to attract many visitors, who seek to escape from the hustle of city living in search of
the peace and tranquillity offered by this diverse wilderness destination.
The Green Kalahari is a desert, yet South Africa’s largest river runs through it. It is remote, yet
it is home to 10% of the country’s vineyards and it is also home to the “first people” of South
Africa, the Khomani San and the Nama. Here you will discover exceptional people and places.

We look forward to receive you with the traditional warmth and friendliness of the people of
the Green Kalahari. We hope to make the Green Kalahari your destination of choice and we
look forward to your return in the near future. Working together, we can do more to attract
tourists to our beautiful region.

To some, the town’s name originates from the Khoi word,
‘gagamas’ (brown), referring to the red clay of the area
with which women daub their faces. To most, though,
Kakamas is a Koranna word meaning ‘poor pasture’ and
‘vicious, charging ox’.
Legend has it that grazing in the vicinity was poor and,
when cattle were driven through the river’s drifts, some
turned on their drivers. Today, the name reflects poorly
on a fertile valley in the Lower Orange River, graced with
vineyards, cotton and lucerne fields.

Kenhardt
On 27 December 1868, special magistrate Maximillian Jackson, with a police contingent,
was sent to act as a bulwark against the Koranna, whose anti-colonial resistance had
erupted into open conflict. Jackson arrived in Kenhardt and set up camp under a giant
camelthorn tree.
For a long time, the most remote settlement in the north western Cape, the town developed
from under this tree, becoming a municipality in 1909. The Hartbees River, with its many
sweet thorn trees, provides a green belt irrigated by the Rooiberg Dam.
The town is at the heart of the Dorper sheep-farming area. There is a Quiver Tree
(Kokerboom) forest within easy driving distance. Tours will take you to pans and outlying
farms where you can view San artwork and enjoy farm hospitality. 4x4 routes are available
