CYCLONE
INTRODUCTION :

Cyclone is a violent and destructive

whril wind moving round a clam
central area. The word “cyclone” is
derived from a Greek word “cyclos”
meaning coils of a snake. It was coined
by Henry Piddington.
MEANING :

 A Cyclone is any low pressure area with

winds spiralling inwards.
 Cyclone rotate anti-clockwise in the

northern hemisphere and rotate clockwise

in the southern hemisphere.
 The process of cyclone formation and
intensification is called Cyclogenesis.
CAUSES :
 The severe atmospheric pressure changes generating
low pressure zone in the sea as a result of which
strong wind blows towards the land, accompanied by
copious rainfall.
 During the cyclonic storms, wind blows strongly with a
speed of 100 to 180 KM per hour.
 There will be heavy rainfall when the cyclone

approaches the sea-shore.

 After crossing thee seashore its speed gradually
decrease and finally dissipates.
 Atmospheric pressure changes are responsibe for the
generation of cyclone and its speed depend on the
magnitude of the pressure changes that took place.
 Cyclone mainly occur in the tropical and temperature
regions of the world.
 Cyclones are like a giant engines that use warm, moist
air as fuel. That is why they form only over a warm ocean
waters near equator.
 Cyclones are usally accompained by violent storm and
bad weather.
DAMAGE CAUSED BY CYCLONE:

 Due to cyclonic storms, villages and

towns on the coastal areas are flooded
with water; tress are uprooted; crops,
buildings, roads, communication
structures and equipment get damaged.
Sometimes land slides too occur.Thus
cyclonic storms greatly affects the
environment.
HOW TO FIND THE CYCLONE:

 Meteorological centres detect the appearance

of a cyclone in the sea by juding the location of
its eye and its direction of movement and
speed.
 Using these data they predict when and where

the cyclone will cross the sea coast and notify

advance warnings to the public, enabling
people to take precautions, so to avoid loss life
and property.
MEASURES TO CONTROL CYCLONE
DAMAGES :
 Intensity of the speed of wind during cyclones get
reduced if there are blocks in its way in the form
of hills or tree covers and hence the resultant
damage will be less . Therefore its advised to
grow vegetative bushes and tree covers on the
sea coasts.
 Its is better to construct buildings on the plains in

the hilly regions than on high rise area near the

top (where the speed of wind is usually high).
 Advance notification of warning about the
cyclone helps the public to take precautions.
 During cyclone, power supply could be

stopped while it crosses the seashore; road

and air traffic could also be suspended.
 ‘Cyclone Rehabilitation Centres’ could be

established on the sea coasts so that those who

are likely to be affected could be made to
stay during cyclones.
CONCLUSION :

Cyclones are powerful and destructive

storms that are formed over warm ocean
waters. They can cause extensive damage to
coastal areas through high winds and heavy
rainfall .
