Associate Professor (M.E.D.) CENTRAL WORKSHOP UNIT 1 “Importance of engineering workshop and description about each shop”
By Dr. Somesh Kumar Sharma NIT Hamirpur WHAT IS WORKSHOP
Engineering Workshop is a place
where students acquire knowledge on the operation of various processes involved in manufacturing and production. The Workshop Practice course makes students competent in handling practical work in engineering environment. Significance of Engineering Workshops
Workshop is the core of learning about different Materials, equipment,
tools and manufacturing practices that are observed in different manufacturing functions and operations. Workshop is also of prime importance when you want to gather about the practical knowledge There are different types of workshop power tools dealing with several sectors of industry like carpentry, bench work and fitting shop, casting and foundry, sheet metal, machine shop electric welding and many others. Different Types of Workshops
Workshop Comprises Various Shop Namely
CNC Shop, Fitting Shop, Welding Shop, Sheet metal Shop, Carpentry Shop, Pattern making Shop, Smithy Shop, Foundry Shop, Turning Shop, Machine Shop and Fabrication Shop CNC SHOP Numerical control (NC) is the automation of machine tools that are operated by abstractly programmed commands encoded on a storage medium, as opposed to controlled manually via hand wheels or levers, or mechanically automated via cams alone. Most NC today is computer numerical control (CNC), in which computers play an integral part of the control. In modern CNC systems, end-to-end component design is highly automated using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs. The programs produce a computer file that is interpreted to extract the commands needed to operate a particular machine via a postprocessor, and then loaded into the CNC machines for production. Since any particular component might require the use of a number of different tools – drills, saws, etc., modern machines often combine multiple tools into a single "cell". In other cases, a number of different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move the component from machine to machine. In either case, the complex series of steps needed to produce any part is highly automated and produces a part that closely matches the original CAD design. The list of Major Machines / Equipments are as follows.

Fitting shop is a place
where fitting or assembling work is carried out. Some repair / maintenance and Die punch work is also carried out in Fitting shop. List of Major Machines/Equipments Are As Follows:
Various types of hands and power
operated tools like- Jig Saw, Saber Saw, Impact Wrench, Cordless Screw Driver, Tapper, High Speed Cut Off Saw. Pedestal Grinder & Bench Grinder Upright Drilling Machine with tapping facility Power Hacksaw Machine Pedestal Drilling Machine . Welding Shop Welding Shop It is the process of permanent fastening where two metals are fused at the temperature of 3200°C (when metals are melted). The most common types of welding are: 1. Electric Arc Welding 2. Gas Welding (Oxy Acetylene Welding) 3. Resistance Welding 4. Forge or Fire Welding THE LIST OF MAJOR MACHINES/EQUIPMENTS
• Plasma Cutting Machine
• PLC Based Spot cum Projection Welding Machine • PLC Based Longitudinal Seam Welding Machine • Brazing Machine • High & Low Pressure Gas Welding Equipment • Drilling and Tapping Machine • Bench Grinding Machine • Horizontal Metal Cutting Band Saw • Welding Transformers / Welding Machine Sheet metal Shop Sheet metal Shop Sheet metal fabrication is using sheet metal to build metal machines and structures. It can be a complex process involving many different professionals. Businesses that specialize in sheet metal fabrication are commonly referred to as fabrication shops, or fab shops for short RIVETING MACHINE AT NITH CARPENTRY & PATTERN MAKING SHOP Carpentry and Patternmaking are the terms related to all kinds of wood work. Scope of this shop is to study all types of woodworking process, hand tools & Machines, types of joints, wood turning process, types of Pattern, allowances etc. Pattern is the replica of the desired product to be cast which is made of wood in common. The common varieties of Indian wood working material are Sag i.e. Teakwood, Babul, Deodar, Mahogany, Sisum etc .The different types of pattern are single peice, split, match plate, cope & Drag, Gated, Loose piece, sweep, Skeleton, segmental, multi-piece pattern, etc. Pattern making is the prerequisite of Casting Manufacturing process The list of Major Machines/Equipments are as follows: • Vertical Band Saw Machine • Universal Wood Working Machine • Pattern Making Lathe • Combined Surface & Thickness Planner • Four Side Planner • Hammer Drill • Chain Saw • Various Power operated tools • Wood Working Lathe Machine • Spindle Molding Machine SMITHY SHOP The shop in which the various forging operations are carried out is known as the smithy or smith's shop. Hand forging process is also known as black- smithy work which is commonly employed for production of small articles using hammers on heated jobs. The list of Major Machines/Equipments are as follows: • Open Hearth Furnaces • Induction Heating Furnace • Pneumatic Power Hammer • Spring Hammer • High Speed Cut Off Saw • Smithy Tool Kit FOUNDRY SHOP Foundry is one of the manufacturing process by which a desired shape of metal is obtained by heating up to its molten state (liquid state), and pouring into mould cavity. After some time metal is allowed to cool and solidify. The solidified piece of metal is known as casting Major Machines/Equipments are as follows
• Mini Couple Furnace
• Oil Fired Tilting Furnace • Induction Heating and Melting Furnace • Pit Furnace • Hydro-Pneumatic Molding Machine • Universal Sand Testing Machine • Sand Muller & Sand Mixture • Permeability Meter • Foundry Tool Kit MACHINE SHOP Machine shop is a place in which metal parts are cut to the required size and put Together to form mechanical units or machines. The machines so made are to be used directly or indirectly in the production of necessities and luxuries of civilization. Machine shop is the base of all mechanical production. PC-NITH CENTRAL WORKSHOP The list of Major Machines/Equipments is as follows: • Universal Milling Machine • Ram Turret Milling Machine • Radial Drilling Machine • Gear Hobbing Machine • Shaper / Planner Machines • Hydraulic Surface Grinder • Universal Tool Cutter & Grinder • Slotter Machine
