Blood Case Studies (Hematology)

Each group will examine one of the cases

on the slides and determine the diagnosis.

Compare the normal values with the

patients. Use a highlighter to indicate
values that are outside the normal range.

Be prepared to share your diagnosis with

the class and your reasoning for that
diagnosis.
Patient: Normal WBC = white blood cell, RBC = red blood cell,
Hb = hemoglobin, HCT = hematocrit, PLT = platelets

CBC Patient Value Normal Range

WBCs 5.5 K/uL 4.5-11 K/uL

RBCs 4.5 million/uL 3.5-5.5 million/uL

Neutrophils 45% 40-69%

Lymphocytes 24% 20-40%

Monocytes 2.8% 2-8%

Eosinophils 1.2% 1-4% Patients will have one of the following conditions:
Sickle Cell Anemia, Mononucleosis, Iron deficient
Basophils .75% .5 - 1%
Anemia, Allergies, Malaria, Leukemia (cancer)
Presence of specific white

blood cells are also shown,
Red Blood Cell Carries oxygen gas from lungs to the tissues.
which may provide clues to
the patient’s condition. White Blood Cell Immune function (several types)

Neutrophil Attacks Bacteria through phagocytosis

Eosinophil Attacks parasites and can be present in

response to allergies

Basophil Active in injury sites. Releases heparin to

prevent clotting & histamines to increase
inflammation

Monocyte Initiates immune response to viruses

Lymphocyte Involved in attacking viruses & abnormal

tissues

Platelets Initiates clotting process
