OBJECTIVES OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

q The primary goal of solid waste management is reducing and


eliminating adverse impacts of waste materials on human
health and the environment to support economic development
and superior quality of life.

q This is to be done in the most efficient possible way and


sustainable, in accordance with the capabilities of the
management/operator (3rd party or City/Regency

The definition of solid waste:
Remains of daily human activities and/or natural processes in solid form.
Solid waste refers to the range of materials—arising from animal and human
activities—that are discarded as unwanted and useless.

reducing and handling waste

CATEGORIES OF WASTE

1. Organic waste: Kitchen waste, waste from food preparation, vegetables, flowers, leaves, fruits, and market
places.
2. Combustibles: Paper, wood, dried leaves, packaging for relief items etc. that are highly organic and having low
moisture content.
3. Non-combustibles: Metal, Tins, Cans, bottles, stones, etc.
4. Toxic waste: Old medicines, paints, chemicals, bulbs, spray cans, fertilizer and pesticide containers, batteries,
shoe polish.
5. Recyclables: Paper, glass, metals, plastics.
