PERSONALITY DISORDERS

What is personality?
In normal people it is flexible-means it adjusts to the environment
With personality disorder-personality inflexible, very rigid

egocyntonic- what I think is not in conflict with my personality (disorders)


- what I think conflicts with my ego (normal individual)

Classifying personality disorders in three clusters:


1. Cluster I = odd/eccentric
1. Paranoid Personality Disorder- paranoia, very suspicious, always looking for
hidden meaning, people have sinister meaning towards them
Explanation: psychodynamic- early childhood experiences, very rigid fathers and
absent or cold mothers
CBT- irrational beliefs all people are evil and will hurt us
2. Schizoid Personality Disorder- isolation, socially unadjusted, not as extreme as
schizophrenia but still delusional, no emotional responses,
Explanations: psychodynamic- abusive parents, absence of love and nurture
CBT-maladaptive thinking- addressing them
Bio-genetics, brain structure, serotonin deficiencies
3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder- very odd behaviors and thinking
Explanations: psychodynamic- very abusive childhood experiences, family
dysfunction,
CBT- learned behavior- modeling, classical and operant conditioning

difference between schizophrenia- schizophrenia usually in adolescence and early


adulthood; in personality disorders, it usually starts in very early childhood
(information usually gained by another close individual)

2. Cluster II = dramatic/erratic

1. Antisocial Personality Disorder – lie, careless, impulsive, reckless, irritable


(AGG), no moral conscience THINKS OTHERS DESERVE TO BE
CONNED Men
risk factor/ conduct disorder + early in life-cruelty
2. Borderline Personality Disorder- unstable self-image, mood shifts (in-
out=d-anx) impulsive, irritable, violate boundaries, inward agg. & violence,
deep feelings of emptiness Women
3. Histrionic Personality Disorder-extremely exaggerated emotions, the
center of attention, neediness for space, theatrical, gestures mannerism ???
4. Narcissistic Personality Disorder- grandiosity, the need for admiration, no
empathy, convinced of own success/ power, influence, expect constant
attention/ admiration ENTITLEMENT MEN
3. Cluster III- anxious/ avoidant

1. Avoidant= uncomfortable in social situations, overwhelmed by feelings of


inadequacy, extremely negative to criticism/ negative evaluation
2. Dependent personality disorder- the need to be taken care of, submissive,
clingy, fear separation, lack of confidence, others powerful- self week, insecure
attack
3. OCPD= “order”, perfection, control, inflexible, not open, inefficient,
inflexible

Dimensional classification of p.d by domains:

1. Negative affectivity- emotional liability, anxiety, separation anxiety,


2. Detachment- withdrawal, anhedonia, intimacy
3. Antagonism- grandiosity, hostility
4. Disinhibition – irresponsibility, rigid perception
5. Psychotism- unusual beliefs, cognitive perception dysregulated
