Characteristics

Read the next text. The copihue

The copihue is a native plant of Chile and is

considered to be our national flower. Its name
comes from the verb kopün , which in the
Mapuche language means "to be upside down."
The copihue plant is a vine that has twisted, hard, flexible, light brown stems. The leaves are elongated and hard,
dark green on top and lighter on the underside.

The copihue flowers are pendulous, fleshy

and have 6 petals (3 internal and 3 external)
that give it a bell shape. They can be up to
15 centimeters long and be red, pink, yellow,
white or mixed.

The copihue produces a sweet fruit called

cucumber, which measures between 3 and 6
centimeters long and can be eaten. It has a
thick skin inside which there are numerous
yellowish brown seeds.

Habitat

The copihue grows in dark forests where

there is great humidity. We can find it in both
the Coastal and Andes mountain ranges, from Valparaíso to Osorno, especially in the areas of Concepción and
Temuco.

Crop
Characteristics

This plant reproduces from its seeds and can take up to 10 years to flower. Due to its
slow flowering and the high price of its flowers, the copihue was declared in serious danger
of extinction and is protected by the Forest Law.

Medical uses

In popular medicine, the copihue root is used to treat diseases such as gout and
rheumatism.
