From new instruments for 'protective farming' to novel contract farming schemes,
there were several fresh ventures of interest for visitors. Relatively new terms such as
'protective farming’ were the buzz words.
The educational visit was organized with the objective to give insight to students
regarding latest innovative ideas, new technologies and best practices available in the
field of agriculture and allied sectors, live demonstration of new and improved
varieties of crops, sensor-based technology, knowledge about soil and water testing
and further provide them an opportunity to interact with various agrochemical and
seed companies.
I left the around 9:00 am along with my friends through college bus, and reach
around 10:00am.
The event is housing about 150 stalls related to agriculture, poultry, animal husbandry,
horticulture and gardening.
One of the main attractions for those involved in farming activities was 'Drip Smart'
that was being introduced in Karnataka for the first time. It is a drip irrigation system
created by Megha Agro that works as an autonomous cloud-based precision farming
platform, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to cater to the farmland's
irrigation needs. The system decides how much water a plot needs and when.
With temperature, soil moisture and humidity measuring units, the system calculates
the water required for the crop on any given day. In case of high chances of rain, the
system decides not to initiate water supply and rely on the natural source instead.
There were numerous stalls selling a variety of seeds and fertilisers with each claiming
that their product was more unique, productive and organic. One among them was a
silica-based fertiliser that claimed to "increase the ability of photosynthesis" that
causes leaves, flowers and stems of a crop to grow larger and thicker.
Organic farming is a production system which avoids or largely excludes the use of
synthetically compounded fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, genetically
modified organisms and livestock food additives. To the maximum extent possible
organic farming system rely upon crop rotations, use of crop residues, animal
manures, legumes, green manures, off farm organic wastes, biofertilizers, mechanical
cultivation, mineral bearing rocks and aspects of biological control to maintain soil
productivity and tilth to supply plant nutrients and to control insect, weeds and other
pests.
2. How does organic farming help in conservation of ecological balance?
Organic farming can be profitable, and organic food appeals to consumers as both a
healthy and ethical choice. Beyond money and ethics, though, organic farming
practices result in numerous environmental benefits.
● Reduced Exposure to Pesticides and Chemicals
● Organic Farming Builds Healthy Soil
● Combatting Erosion
● Fighting the Effects of Global Warming
● Supports Water Conservation and Water Health
● Encourages Biodiversity
3. Write down the practices to be followed in an organic farming system.
❖ SOIL HEALTH : Healthy soil is that which allows plants to grow to their
maximum productivity without disease or pests and without a need for off-farm
supplements.
❖ COVER CROPS : Cover crops are different from cash crops, which are those
that a farmer sells for profit, such as corn or soybeans.
Visit to the Krishi Mela widened the knowledge of us through demonstration of new
technologies and practices developed by the University of Agricultural Sciences,
usage of organic manures, biofertilizers and knowledge about the machines and
equipment required for carrying out various agricultural works and strengthening the
future of Indian agriculture sector.
Students also witnessed the recent advancement of smart agriculture for improving
the crop productivity.
Not only Students, Several Farmers also claimed that they found Krishi Mela helpful
as they met other farmers from different districts of the state and discussed what
methods work in fa

4.1 Introduction
On January 5th , 2023, a water conversation campaign was conducted in our college campus by a
group of students, faculty members, and volunteers. The aim of the campaign was to create
awareness among the student and staff members about the importance of water conversation and
to encourage them to take action to save water. The campaign started with marching through the
campus and interacted with the students, faculty members, and staff members to raise awareness
about the importance of water conservation.
Water is a very important resource in our life. Water is becoming scarce due to increase in
Population, industries and agricultural activities and due to poor rainfall . A report of 2009
suggested that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed
supply by 50%. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent
for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation.
2. Better irrigation practices - Conservation of water in the agricultural sector is essential since
water is necessary for the growth of plants and crops. A depleting water table and a rise in
salinity due to overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has made matters serious
3. Use of saline water for irrigation - Saline water is widely available but rarely used for
agriculture because it restricts plant growth and yield. Salt resistant varieties of crops have also
been developed in recent times.
4. Fog and dew - contain substantial amounts of water that can be used directly by adapted plant
species. Artificial surfaces such as netting-surfaced traps or polyethylene sheets can be exposed
to fog and dew.
5. Contour farming - is adopted in hilly areas and in lowland areas for paddy fields. Farmers
recognize the efficiency of contour-based systems for conserving soil and water.
6. Tree plantation - n in water catchments area/riverbanks and clean-up drives near water
bodies are some of the other initiatives taken up to preserve our water resources.
7. Desalination - To augment the depletion of fresh water resources in coastal areas due to
excessive abstraction, desalination like distillation, electro-dialysis and reverse osmosis are
available.
8. Soak pit construction - Water run offs and water logging are combated by constructing soak
pits near water points like hand pumps. This is a sanitation measure and also helps in recharge of
ground water.
Runoff water from the cultivated area is diverted towards bore well recharge unit through field
trenches. It allows to enter in primary filter unit wherein the major sediments will be arrested
and water flows to the secondary filter unit. Through secondary filter unit, muddy water will
pass through 4 layers of filtration material and percolate in subsoil strata as well as some part
enter directly in casing pipe of borewell. The filtration efficiency of this unit comes out to be
more than 90 percent.
In our campus we have 2 units of borewell recharge , both the units have a catchment area of
3000m2 with 1000 mm . Average rainfall recharge is 30 lakhs liters /year.
2. Rain water Harvesting - The collection and storage of rain, rather than allowing it to run off.
Rainwater is collected from a roof-like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well,
shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with percolation, so that it seeps down and restores the
ground water. Dew and fog can also be collected with nets or other tools. Rainwater harvesting
differs from stormwater harvesting as the runoff is typically collected from roofs and other
surfaces for storage and subsequent reuse. Its uses include watering gardens, livestock ,
irrigation , domestic use with proper treatment, and domestic heating. The harvested water can
also be committed to longer-term storage or groundwater recharge .
In our campus we have 4 units of rain water harvesting , 2 units has volume of 4020 ft3 with 1.1
lakhs litres capacity , unit 3 has volume of 1700 ft3 with 0.5 lakhs litres , unit 4 has catchment
area of 556 m2 with 1000 mm. The average rainfall recharges is 5.5 lakhs litres /year.
3. Sewage Treatment Plant - Sewage is the waste generated from residential, institutional,
commercial and industrial establishments. STP plant treats the sewage to make it fit for safe
disposal, agricultural use or domestic use in toilets etc. Sewage usually contains a high quantity
of organic and inorganic wastes. It is essential to treat sewage before it enters into any water
body. If sewage, is allowed to enter the water sources without treatment, it will contaminate
them; which is why it is essential to treat sewage properly before letting it into rivers or any
other sources of water.
The general construction of a sewage treatment plant doesn’t differ too drastically from that of a
septic tank. Just as with a septic tank, sewage flows from the property being serviced into the
first chamber of the sewage treatment plant. Here, the water sits until grease, oil and scum have
floated to the top and solids have settled on the bottom of the tank.
The final stage of a sewage treatment plant is one last settlement tank. This final tank allows the
very last solids that may remain to sink to the bottom of the tank before the effluent is
discharged into a soakaway or watercourse.
Once the treatment process has been completed and the wastewater has been treated as
thoroughly as possible, it can be discharged into the environment. This is another key area where
sewage treatment plants differ from sewage treatment plants. Whereas you must discharge
effluent from a septic tank into a soakaway for further treatment in the ground, subject to an
Environment Agency Consent to Discharge, you can discharge your effluent into local water
sources straight from your treatment plant.
In our campus we have 150 KLD STP sewage treatment plant which uses Sequential batch
reactor
4.4 Conclusion
Water problems will not go away by themselves. On the contrary, they will worsen unless we, as
a global community, respond and use water responsibly. So, before it is too late, let us all, as
individuals, families, communities, companies & institutions, pledge towards using water
wisely.
Our water resources, irregularly distributed in space and time, are under pressure due to major
population change and increased demand. Access to reliable data on the availability, quality and
quantity of water, and its variability, form the necessary foundation for sound management of
water resources. The different options for augmentation expand the boundaries of the water
resource in a conventional sense, helping to match demand and supply. All components of the
hydrological cycle, and the influence of human activities on it, need to be understood and
quantified to efficiently and sustainably develop and protect our water resources.
In conclusion, water conservation in college campuses is crucial to ensure the efficient use of
water resources. College campuses use a significant amount of water for various activities, such
as irrigation, cleaning, and drinking water supply. Therefore, it is essential to adopt sustainable
water conservation practices in college campuses to reduce water waste and ensure the efficient
use of this precious resource. Measures such as fixing water leaks, installing water-efficient
fixtures, using native plants for landscaping, and harvesting rainwater can significantly reduce
water usage. Implementing sustainable water conservation practices not only conserves water
but also reduces water bills and helps in creating a more environmentally friendly campus.
