Service flow rate per filter = 40 /3 = 13.3 m3/hr.

By using three filters in duty and one backwash 3

The number of filters is based on one in maintenance and one backwash, so two filters

can be loaded for max filtration rate for short time.

Process Calculation

Considering one filter in backwash mode for 10 minute.

3
Service flow rate per filter = 13.3 m /hr.
3 2
Backwash rate = 36 m / m .hr.

Required water for backwash = (Filter cross-section area) x Backwash rate

_____ 2

4
Duration of Backwash = 10 minutes

Backwash interval for one filter = 24 hr.

3
Water required for one filter = 32 x 10 = 5.3 m
60
Number of filter daily backwash = 3
3
Total filtered water required per day = 5.3 x3 = 15.9 m (min) for 3
filters
3
Total filtered water required per day = 5.3 x 9 = 47.7 m (min)
for 9 Filters
3
Total volume of backwash tank is considered 2 x 25 m

Backwash Frequency Calculation

Media Provided : 0.67 m3

Based upon bulk density Void volume : 0.29 m3

Due to Size distribution in the media approximately 2% of the void gets filled / utilized due to a layer of
cake formation on the surface of the media (based upon industry experience). This layer formation also
helps in improved further filtration of the feed water upto the time permissible delta pressure is
achieved.

Therefore available void volume for entrapment of the solids : 0.0058 m3 (5.8 Liters)
Assuming Wet Solids trapped in the Filter has Specific Gravity of 1.5
Amount of solids that can be retained in the media -5.5/1.5=3.66 kg

Normal Operation – Feed water with 10 ppm TSS

Flow of solids per filter per hour - 0.133 kg
Running Hours for Filter = 3.66/0.133 = 27.5 Hrs
Therefore the filters shall be backwashed once in 24 hrs.

Process Calculation

Peak Operation – Feed water with 100 ppm TSS

Flow of solids per filter per hour - 1.33 kg
Running Hours for Filter = 3.66/1.33 = 2.75 Hrs
Therefore the filters shall be backwashed once in 2-2.5 hrs.

Above is typical calculation and actual runtime of the filters depends upon actual shape / size of trapped
solids and media.

2.3 Backwash Pumps: 2 (1 duty / 1 standby)

3
From above, required flow rate for backwash = 32 m /hr.
3
Selected pumps at 32 m /hr @ 20 m TDH

2.4 Filter Feed Pumps: 2 (1 duty / 1 standby)

Design Basis
3
Required feed water for first pass RO = 830 m /day = 34.6 m3/hr

Considering additional backwash due to TSS 100 ppm

3
Selected Filter Feed pumps at 40 m /hr @ 55 m TDH

2.5 First Pass High Pressure Pumps: 1 duty /stream

0
Design Basis – RO projection at 25 C (After Three Years)

Service flow rate per pump = 34.6 m3/hr.

According to the producer of membrane the value of pressure in relation with TDS

Is as following:

TDS (mg/L) 46,000 55,000

RO Feed Pressure bar 58 74

For the reduced feed TDS there would be change in the feed pressure as indicated above without any
change in the production quantity.
In case of no backwashing of the media filter, the membranes can be fed with 40 m3/h.

Product performance calculations are based on nominal element performance when operated on a feed water of acceptable quality. The results shown on the
printouts produced by this program are estimates of product performance. No guarantee of product or system performance is expressed or implied unless provided
in a separate warranty statement signed by an authorized Hydranautics representative. Calculations for chemical consumption are provided for convenience and are
based on various assumptions concerning water quality and composition. As the actual amount of chemical needed for pH adjustment is feedwater dependent and
not membrane dependent, Hydranautics does not warrant chemical consumption. PageIf 18

PageIf 24
a product or system warranty is required, please contact your Hydranautics

Product performance calculations are based on nominal element performance when operated on a feed water of acceptable quality. The results shown on the
printouts produced by this program are estimates of product performance. No guarantee of product or system performance is expressed or implied unless provided
in a separate warranty statement signed by an authorized Hydranautics representative. Calculations for chemical consumption are provided for convenience and are
based on various assumptions concerning water quality and composition. As the actual amount of chemical needed for pH adjustment is feedwater dependent and
not membrane dependent, Hydranautics does not warrant chemical consumption. PageIf 30
a product or system warranty is required, please contact your Hydranautics

Product performance calculations are based on nominal element performance when operated on a feed water of acceptable quality. The results shown on the printouts
produced by this program are estimates of product performance. No guarantee of product or system performance is expressed or implied unless provided in a separate
warranty statement signed by an authorized Hydranautics representative. Calculations for chemical consumption are provided for convenience and are based on various
assumptions concerning water quality and composition. As the actual amount of chemical needed for pH adjustment is feedwater dependent and not membrane
dependent, Hydranautics does not warrant chemical consumption. If a product or system warranty is required, please contact your Hydranautics representative. Non-
standard or extended warranties may result in different pricing than previously quoted.

Concentrate Langelier Saturation Index too high (2.27)

The following are recommended general guidelines for designing a reverse

osmosis system using Hydranautics membrane elements. Please consult
Hydranautics for specific recommendations for operation beyond the specified
guidelines.

Feed and Concentrate flow rate limits

Element diameter Maximum feed flow rate Minimum concentrate

rate
8.0 inches 75 gpm (283.9 lpm) 12 gpm (45.4 lpm)
8.0 inches(Full Fit) 75 gpm (283.9 lpm) 30 gpm (113.6 lpm)

Concentrate polarization factor (beta) should not exceed 1.2 for standard elements

Saturation limits for sparingly soluble salts in concentrate

Soluble salt Saturation

BaSO4 6000%
CaSO4 230%
SrSO4 800%
SiO2 100%

Langelier Saturation Index for concentrate should not exceed 1.8

The above saturation limits only apply when using effective scale inhibitor.
Without scale inhibitor, concentrate saturation should not exceed 100%.
