Synopsis

The Krusty Krab Halloween party.

As the episode begins on the evening of

Halloween in Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob is
cleaning the dishes at the Krusty Krab at the
end of the workday. He becomes frightened by
the door suddenly closing and a message
reading "BOO" written on order slips.

After he finishes, he begins to run away, but Mr.

Krabs stops him and asks him if he wants to
hear his "annual scary story," and he then does.
Mr. Krabs tells the story of "The Flying
Dutchman," a ghost who steals souls on
Halloween. Squidward, dressed up like the Flying
Dutchman, appears behind SpongeBob, saying
that he will steal his soul, terrifying him.
SpongeBob, who has a reputation for being
easily scared, is then nicknamed "SpongeBob
ScaredyPants," rushes home, and is scared by
everything he sees on the way.

After being accidentally scared by Patrick

wearing Groucho Marx glasses, he asks him for
help. They make a "Flying Dutchman" costume,
but it fails to scare anyone. SpongeBob realizes
that a "real" ghost has a round head and that he
has a square one. Patrick shaves SpongeBob's
head, making it round. Believing themselves to
be scary, SpongeBob and Patrick go around
town attempting to scare people, and believe
themselves to be successful in doing so,
although their "victims" are simply confused by
their antics.

Then, they go to the roof of the Krusty Krab,

where a Halloween party is taking place. They
turn o! all the lights in the building and Patrick
lowers SpongeBob in with a rope while providing
the voice of the "Dutchman," which initially
terrifies everyone. However, when a jellyfish
stings Patrick, whom the rope is tied to, he
starts running around in pain, causing
SpongeBob to fly around uncontrollably,
exposing his true identity.

Everybody starts laughing at SpongeBob, but

soon the real Flying Dutchman appears. He
explains to them how o!ended he is by people
dressing up as him for Halloween, and that
SpongeBob's costume is the worst of all. Before
he is about to steal the souls of everyone
present, the Flying Dutchman first takes o!
SpongeBob's costume, which reveals that his
brain is almost completely exposed as a result of
Patrick's shaving.

SpongeBob's brain.

The Dutchman flees in terror. Subsequently,

everyone runs away from the Krusty Krab
screaming, leaving SpongeBob satisfied to finally
have succeeded in scaring people. Patrick
comments on SpongeBob's "pink hat," and
SpongeBob explains that it is not a hat, but
rather his brain. Patrick also screams and runs
away. SpongeBob ends the episode reassuring
Patrick that his skin will grow back.

Trivia

General

When this episode, along with the sister

episode "I Was a Teenage Gary," premiered
as part of Nickelodeon's Halloween lineup, it
was viewed in 3.50 million American
households.[3]
The title card background is similar to those
of "Nature Pants" and "MuscleBob
Bu!Pants," except with pumpkins and
ghosts added in.
The episode's title is referenced numerous
times when people call SpongeBob
"Scaredy Pants."
The Ghastly Ones sang "SpongeBob
ScaredyPants," which is a Halloween remix
of the SpongeBob SquarePants theme
song. It is used in the end credits of this
episode, and is also used as a special
feature on the Halloween DVD. It can be
heard here: [1].
In Philippines, SPG Rating by MTRCB
because of Horror.

"I've come for your pickle."

Innuendo: Mr. Krabs uses a Krabby Patty as

a stand-in for the Flying Dutchman's ship
and the patty's pickle as a stand-in for a
soul. When Squidward appears behind
SpongeBob after Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob
about the Flying Dutchman, he says, "I've
come for your pickle."

SpongeBob scaredy pants UK censorship

In the UK and Ireland airings of this episode,

the scene depicting Patrick cutting chunks
of SpongeBob's head is removed, although
it was left intact on the British and Irish DVD
releases.[4]
When Patrick gives SpongeBob the shoes,
he calls SpongeBob "Hans," possibly
referencing the live-action hand seen
multiple times in the series and in the
show's theme song.

SpongeBob's brain reveal casts a shadow

that looks identical to Squidward's face
shape.
Patrick's scream when he realizes that
SpongeBob's pink hat is actually his brain is
later reused in "Survival of the Idiots," "I Had
an Accident," and "To Save a Squirrel."
The main characters' Halloween costumes:
Sandy is a pet goldfish in a bowl.
Squidward is the Flying Dutchman.
Pearl is the Bride of Frankenstein or a
lady vampire.
Patrick is Groucho Marx.
Mrs. Pu! is a witch.
SpongeBob is the Ghost of the Flying
Dutchman.
Brian Doyle-Murray plays the Flying
Dutchman in this episode, and all
subsequent episodes featuring the
character. Coincidentally, he was also born
on Halloween (October 31).
This episode marks the first for several
things:
The first physical appearance of the
Flying Dutchman. He previously
appeared in a magazine in "Squidward
the Unfriendly Ghost."
The first Halloween special of the series,
and first holiday-themed episode of any
kind in the series.
The first episode to take place entirely at
night.
The first time Mrs. Pu! appears without
her boating school.
The first time Patrick shaves
SpongeBob. The second time he does
so is in "The Good Krabby Name."
This is also the only time
SpongeBob is completely shaved,
exposing his brain.
This is the only episode in which the Flying
Dutchman's pigtails are not straight.
This was Peter Burns' last episode as a
writer and story editor. His spot was taken
by Merriwether Williams.[5]
This episode was paired up with di!erent
episodes in di!erent marathons:
During the Spine-Tingling, Teeth-
Chattering, Hair-Raising, Spooktastic
Nicktoon Boo-Fest event, this episode
was paired up with "Rock Bottom."[6]
During the Bikini Bottom's Most Wanted
event, this episode was paired up with
"Sleepy Time."[7]
During the Best Day Ever marathon, this
episode was paired up with "Mermaid
Man and Barnacle Boy V."[8]
During the Shriek Week event, this
episode was paired with "The Curse of
Bikini Bottom."[9]
On the October 26, 2009 airing, this
episode was paired with "Chimps
Ahoy."[10]
On the October 27, 2009 airing, this
episode was paired with "Squidward the
Unfriendly Ghost"[11]
This episode, its sister episode, and "The
Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom" only air in
reruns on Nickelodeon USA in the month of
October, making all three episodes
extremely rare to find on American TV, since
they are Halloween-themed episodes. This
has also occurred for "Christmas Who?" "It's
a SpongeBob Christmas!," and "SpongeBob's
Road to Christmas" since they are
Christmas-themed episodes and only air
during the month of December.
This originally was the case for
"Valentine's Day" and "The Paper," as
they air only in the month of early
February, along with "Fools in April" and
"Neptune's Spatula," as they only air in
the start of April. However, these four
episodes have more recently aired
