Experiment No. 6
Title:
Perceive the effect of closing the loop on the steady state performance, stiffness, response time
and frequency response of control system.

Objectives:

i. To recognize the significant parts of a feedback control system and manipulate

transferfunction blocks.
ii. Perceive the effect of closing the loop on the steady state performance, stiffness,
responsetime and frequency response

Apparatus Required:
✓ MS-15 DC Motor Module
✓ AS-3 Command Potentiometer
✓ CLIO Interface Module with PC connection leads
✓ System Power supply
✓ 4mm Connection Leads
✓ PC running VCL (Visual Control Laboratory) Software

Procedure:
• I started VCL software and Loaded setup | CA06PE05.
• I set all the values as shown in Table.
• The Input signal was trace 1 (dark blue), the output velocity was trace 4 (purple),
Errorwas trace 3 (dark green) and Drive was trace 5 (brown).

• I substituted Kp for G gives the forward loop gain K.G = K.Kp. The velocity voltage is
fed back directly so H = 1.
• I checked that the gain K in the gain box on the on-screen mimic is set to 1 and switched

ON the motor.

• Then I investigated how the error decreases as the gain is increased. With the Reference
Velocity set to 2.5 volts (50%), I measured the Output Velocity and Error as the gain is
increased. Input Voltage, V =2.5 volts,
• Plant gain Kp = 0.92

• I disabled the motor.

• From these all, I noted that, as the gain increased, C/R —> 1 and E/R —> 0.
However, with high gain the output became noisy and the motor started making
peculiar noises.

Conclusion & Discussion:

From the above experiment, I noted that, as the gain of the motor is increased, C/R approaches
close to 1 and E/R approaches close to 0. However, with high gain the output became noisy and
the motor started making peculiar noises.
