INTERPRETERS AND AWARENESS OF CURRENT
INTERNATIONAL ISSUES
Some people assume that interpreting is just a word-for-word translation
of a person’s speech. However, the reality is that interpreting is a complex and dynamic process that requires a high level of expertise, training and experience. It isn’t enough for an interpreter to just be fluent in both languages, they must also have a wide range of skills in order to provide high-quality interpreting service. Underqualified and inexperienced interpreters can lead to serious misunderstandings between speakers. A high-quality interpreter will have a range of tools and techniques that they can use to overcome interpreting challenges and difficulties. Interpreters play a crucial role in facilitating communication between individuals or groups that speak different languages. Being aware of international current issues is essential for interpreters for several reasons. Staying informed about global events allows interpreters to comprehend the context in which conversations are taking place. International current issues often shape the dynamics between parties involved and influence the tone and content of discussions. This contextual understanding enables interpreters to provide more accurate and nuanced interpretations, ensuring that the intended meaning is conveyed effectively. Also, the awareness of international current issues helps interpreters stay updated on relevant terminology and jargon. Issues such as geopolitical developments, economic trends, or public health crises introduce new vocabulary and concepts into conversations. Interpreters need to be familiar with this terminology to accurately convey messages and avoid misunderstandings that may arise from misinterpreting specialized terms. Interpreters need to be aware of cultural nuances associated with international current issues. Different cultures may perceive and discuss global events differently, and interpreters must navigate these cultural differences to ensure accurate and culturally sensitive communication. Being attuned to the cultural context allows interpreters to adapt their interpretations to the cultural expectations and preferences of the speakers. In addition, international current issues can impact the emotional and psychological state of individuals involved in discussions. Whether it's political tensions, environmental disasters, or health crises, these issues can evoke strong emotions. Interpreters need to be sensitive to the emotional undercurrents and handle the communication with empathy and professionalism, helping to manage any potential conflicts or challenges that may arise. In essence, being aware of international current issues enhances an interpreter's ability to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps, facilitating effective communication in our interconnected global society.
