REPORT ON SUBSOIL EXPLORATION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This report represents the results of the sub surface exploration for the proposed project
Joydebpur-Mymensingh Road Improvement Project (JMRIP), Package-4 at Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Gate.
A total of three (3) boreholes were drilled at locations shown in the Appendix- A1.
The work was carried out according to the instructions given by Special Works Organization
(SWO) Corps of Engineers, Bangladesh Army.
b. To carry out Field Standard Penetration Test (S.P.T - 63.5 kg hammer having a free
fall of 760mm) to determine the natural bearing resistance of the subsoil for the
purpose of design.
c. To obtain disturbed and undisturbed soil samples for carrying out the laboratory tests
to determine the natural and relevant physical properties of the subsoil pertaining to
the site for the purpose of design.
For fulfilling the objectives, the relevant information was obtained by determining the index
and engineering properties of soil.
Field exploration program was conducted during the period from 17th February 2015 to 21th
February 2015. The program was carried out by personnel from our office who were
responsible for measuring Standard Penetration Test (SPT) value and obtaining disturbed and
undisturbed samples of the subsurface soils.
1
A total of three (3) boreholes were drilled in locations shown in Appendix –A1 Borehole
Location Plan.
The depths of the boreholes were 30.0m (BH1, BH2 and BH3) below the existing ground
level.
The borehole in the size of 89mm in diameter was advanced by boring machine for
clayey/sandy layer. A wash boring is advanced by jetting water which is pumped through the
hollow drilling rods. Cuttings were removed from the hole by the circulating water. The
drilling rods are moved up and down by pulling and slackening the rope and are at the same
time rotated back and forth by means of a driller. The water is pumped from a small swamp
and the soil-laden water from the borehole is discharged into the same reservoir, where the
coarse materials settled out and from which the so-called 'wet samples' can be secured.
Casing in the size of NX 89mm is required in the soft or cohesionless soils, but is often
omitted in stiff, cohesive soils which only small representative samples as desired.
Changes in the character of the soils are determined partly by the feel of the driller or the
resistance to penetration and partly by examination of the spoils in the water as it emerges
from the casing. But definite identification of the soil can only be made when representative
samples are taken from the bottom of the boreholes.
The Standard Penetration Test (S.P.T) utilizes a 50mm O.D x 600mm long thick-walled split
sampler tube driven into undisturbed soil under the impact of a sliding hammer weighing
63.5kg having a free fall of 760mm. The penetration resistance of 'N' value is recorded as the
number of hammer blows required to achieve a penetration of 300mm after the initial
penetration of 150mm (to allow for any disturbed materials at the bottom of the borehole).
After the completion of the test, the sampler tube is removed and disassembled to provide a
'disturbed' but representative sample.
As for the bearing capacity from the result of Standard Penetration Test, we suggest the
numbers of the blows per 300mm 'N' on 760mm free fall basis, multiply by 10 would give an
indication of the bearing capacity in KN per square meter.
Undisturbed soil samples were taken from boreholes as directed by the Engineer according to
the site conditions.
A 75mm O.D thin walled UD sampler was forced by the drilling machine with the donut
hammer to exert a force without uplifting of the drilling machine. After the sampler is
removed from the borehole, the length of the samples recovered was measured, noted and the
recovery ration was computed. When sampling below the water table or where water has
been used to clean the casing, the water table was maintained at the top of the casing until the
sampler is removed.
2
A maximum of 50mm of undisturbed material was removed from the top and the bottom of
the tube to take up a jar sample for both the top and the bottom. Subsequent to the preparation
of these samples, both ends of the sample will be coated with a non-shrinking wax, to ensure
airtight seal. Disturbed samples were taken from continued sampling and split barrel sample
in conjunction with the penetration resistance test for the purpose of laboratory soil
classification.
The water table in each borehole was taken while drilling was in progress at the following
times:
The levels at the bottom of the boreholes and at the bottom of the casing (if any) were
measured and recorded at the same time as each water table reading. Final water levels are
included in the bore logs.
The site is for the proposed project Joydebpur-Mymensingh Road Improvement Project
(JMRIP), Package-4 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Gate.
The three (3) boreholes were located as shown in the Appendix- A1.
The subsoil within the vicinity of the boreholes consists mainly are shown in the bore logs.
Borehole Water Table was found 1.5m below at BH1, BH2, and BH3 from the Existing
Ground Level.
The borehole was terminated at 30.0m (BH1, BH2, and BH3). Details on thickness, depth,
distribution, SPT blow counts and depth are shown in the borehole log.

4.0 ENGINEERING PROPERTIES
The engineering properties of the subsoil formation of the project area have been evaluated
based on laboratory tests, particularly Direct Shear Test and Miniature Vane Shear Test. The
values of different parameters are provided in different tables of Appendix A3.
4*N
N' P0' 1 . 5 ksf
1 2 * P0'
4* N
N' P0' 1 . 5 ksf
3.25 0.5 * P0'
Field SPT values have been corrected for overburden pressure and dilatancy.
In very fine, or silty, saturated sand Terzaghi & Peck (First Edition, P-426) recommended
that the penetration number be adjusted if N is greater than 15 as N=15+0.5*(N-15).
For cohesive soil, the criteria for finding Bearing Capacity is based on the cohesion
parameters obtained from unconfined compression strength tests or estimated from the
corrected SPT values. For granular soil it is Bearing Capacities of the foundation have been
evaluated, according to Terzaghi, Meyerhof, and Hansen are provided in Appendix A4:
(TABLE-1).
B. DEEP FOUNDATION
Whenever necessary Deep Foundation preferably Pile may be used. To evaluate skin friction
and end bearing capacity following formulae may be used-
q pu q c 4 * N ton ft 2
However, when soil are not purely sand rather presence of some silt material are found,
above relation may be modified as per observation of Schmertmann (1970)
q pu q c 3 * N ton ft 2
4
f su q c 200 3 * N 200 ton ft 2
f s c q * k * tan
Depending on the existing soil type, the values of both the skin friction as well as the end
bearing of the pile have been evaluated for the different depths of investigation and are
presented in Appendix A5: (TABLE-2) and Appendix A6: (TABLE-3).

8.0 RECOMMENDATION
For the proposed project Joydebpur-Mymensingh Road Improvement Project (JMRIP),
Package-4 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Gate, following
recommendation is given considering all aspects: -
SHALLOW FOUNDATION
Here mat foundation or isolated column footing foundation may be considered at a depth of
1.5m to 3.0m by Ground Improvement particularly with Sand Pile. Net allowable bearing
capacity for isolated column footing foundation bearing capacity at different depth has also
been provided in Appendix A4 (Table-1).
DEEP FOUNDATION
Deep foundation especially RCC bored pile may be considered in case of settlement problem.
Skin friction as well as point-bearing capacity for different layers have been derived and are
provided in Appendix A5, Table-2 for driven pile and Appendix A6, Table-3 for bored
pile.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE
Note:
a. The geo-technical engineer may select any alternative foundation type according to
requirement in the light of information provided in this report.
b. Whenever any soil improvement measures are taken or pile is driven, field tests must
be carried out to ensure that the bearing capacity and settlement criterion
commensurate to design values.
