THE TOUGHEST JOHN WAGNER CARLOS EZQUERRA

BOUNTY HUNTER
IN THE GALAXY!

SEARCH & DESTROY

There was a time in the 22nd century where man’s lawlessness spread out
amongst the stars across new frontiers. Enter the Search and Destroy Agents
– mutants warped from birth by Strontium 90 fallout from the last,
great war. Known by the ‘norms’ as ‘Strontium Dogs’, these men
and women enact justice throughout a cruel and unforgiving
universe. It’s a hard and dangerous life where only the toughest
can survive. Men like Johnny Alpha – a mutant with the ability
to emit powerful Alpha-Rays from his eyes!
SEARCH &
DESTROY
These earliest Strontium Dog stories had a great impact
UK£19.99
upon readers making it the stand out strip in Starlord.
RATED: TEEN +/SCIENCE FICTION
When the comic merged with 2000 AD, Johnny Alpha quickly
became a fan favourite character and remains one of the
most iconic strips in the history of British comics.

My dear friend Carlos is no longer with us, and that’s a great Dredd had been taken away from him, early on, shared with
sadness. Though he was justifiably proud of his design of Judge too many others – excellent artists many of them who built
Dredd and Dredd’s world he cared much more for another of reputations on the character – so though his fertile imagination
his many brilliant creations, Johnny Alpha. had given birth to the judges he felt the story no longer properly
belonged to him.
He would have been pleased to see this volume today.
Strontium Dog was different. That was always his and his alone.
He loved Johnny Alpha and Wulf and all the crazy mutants that
populated the story. He ‘got’ Johnny Alpha from the start, and
though I continued to struggle for some time to truly understand
the character, Johnny was there, perfectly defined in Carlos’s art,
right from picture one.

P.02-03 (INTRO).indd 2 17/03/2020 11:27

In fact, so strongly did he feel for Johnny that when my co-writer Here then are the original Strontium Dog stories from Starlord’s
Alan Grant and I unwisely decided to kill him, Carlos flat refused brief life, with colour spreads lovingly restored. Enjoy the birth of
to draw the story. I think he never fully forgave us, even when I mutant bounty hunter Johnny Alpha and his norm partner Wulf -
later decided to resurrect Johnny. wild flights of imagination, a crazy ‘Space Western’ taking shape,
finding its feet – graced by the art of one of the true comic heroes.
Starlord was meant to be an upmarket companion to 2000 AD, with
more sophisticated stories and better paper, but disappointing JOHN WAGNER
sales convinced management that there wasn’t room for both Earth, 2020
publications and they were merged – or more accurately Starlord
was consumed by 2000 AD.
