LABORATORY ACTIVITY 205

CASE-BASED EXERCISE ON THE TOPIC HORMONES

Name: ___________________________________
Date: ____________________________________
Section: _________________________________

I. INTRODUCTION

Metabolic pathways need to synchronize so that the production of energy or the synthesis of
end products meets the requirements of the cell. Since the cells operate within a network of
interacting tissues rather than in isolation, it is necessary that a complex communication system
coordinate bodily functions. Hormones serve as regulatory signals, informing individual cells
about the overall metabolic state of the body.

II. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the activity, students will:

1. Comprehend the significance of hormones in maintaining homeostasis;
2. Understand the role of hormones and hormonal imbalances in the development of
diseases noted in this activity; and
3. Get introduced to the concept of history-taking which is important in creating a
differential diagnosis.

III. PRE-ACTIVITY QUESTIONS (This should be done individually. Ensure that your answers
are not copy-pasted from the sources, nor worded or phrased similarly to those of other
students. Point deduction will apply.):
1. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
a. What is the Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)?

b. What hormones are involved in the pathophysiology of OHSS? What

tissues/endocrine glands produce these hormones? Tabulate your answers.

Produce the Hormone

c. What is the connection between the hormones and the development of OHSS?

d. What is clomiphene?
e. What are the signs and symptoms seen in OHSS?
