I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. identify direct and indirect speech rules 5 & 6;


b. use rules 5 and 6 of transforming reported speech in sharing
personal experiences; and
c. construct direct speech and indirect speech in sentences.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Rule 5 & 6 of Direct and Indirect Speech

References: Road to Anglo-American Literature: Learners Module in Grade 9,

Materials: Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, and visual aids

Activity

Compare and Contrast!

Read the two sets of sentences, then compare and contrast the following
sentences.

Ask the students the following questions:

IV. Abstraction

Discuss the lesson, “Direct and Indirect Speech, Rule 1 & 2”

Rule 5 - If the quoted part is an imperative sentence, it is change into an


infinitive phrase to make a reported declarative sentence.

Example: Our female adviser told us, “Take short-term computer


courses in college for the six months.”

Reported: Our female adviser told us to take short-term


computer courses in college for six months.

Example: My father told me, “Eat your lunch.”

Reported: My father told me to eat my lunch.

Rule 6 - The pronouns in the quoted part are replaced accordingly:

1.The first person in direct speech is when the statement focuses on


the speaker itself. It changes first persons of “quoted part” according to the
subject of “explanatory part.”
Direct: Marvin says, “I am in the first class .”

Indirect: Marvin says that he is in the first class.

Direct: Ana said to me, “I am happy.”

Indirect: Ana told me that she was happy.

2.The second person of direct speech is when the speaker is talking


to the person involved in the statement. It changes second person of the
“quoted part” according to the object in the “explanatory part.”
Direct: She says to Carla, “You have done your work.”

Indirect: She tells them that she have done her work.

Direct: Joy said to Paul, “You passed the exam.”

Indirect: Joy told Paul that he passed the exam.

3. The third person of direct speech is when the subject of


conversation is absent. Make no change if the there are third persons in
“quoted speech.”
Direct: He says, “She dances well.”

Indirect: He says that she dances well.

Direct: Joana said, “She looks sad.”

Indirect: Joana said she looked sad.

V. Application

Answer Me!

Transform the direct sentences into indirect speech. Afterwards,


identify what rule of direct and indirect speech is used in the given sentences.

1. The female nurse said, “Call me back later.”


2. I tell them, “She will not tell him about the secret.”
3. The male attorney says, “Have a seat.”
4. Jerome told Faith, “May I borrow your pen?”
5. Mrs. Paduran told me, “Do not do that!”
6. He will say to the teacher, “She is not feeling good.”
7. Jane said to Carlo, “You brought sunshine to my world.”
8. She said, “My brother may not attend the meeting next week.
9. Her best friend asked him, “Can you swim?”
10. Mother told me, “I am at the shopping market.”

Generalization

The teacher will ask questions to the students, to sum up their


understanding.

 What is rule 5 & 6 of direct and indirect speech?


 What is the importance of knowing direct and indirect speech in our daily life
communication?

VI. Evaluation

Write 5 examples of Direct Speeches using either Rule 5 and 6 and transform
it to Indirect speeches.

VII. Assignment

Instruction: Write 5 examples of direct and indirect speech in a 1/2 crosswise.
