TECHNICAL PIG CLEANING PROCEDURE

1. Purpose
After finishing welding process of pipe, if there still remain debris like
water, fat and things like welding slag, gloves and tools through welder’s
carelessness, by eliminating those debris, rust and scale and by coating it,
we promote purity of pipe and make it resist corrosion. By this process, we
try to extend durability of facilities and promote efficiency.

3. SPECIFICATIONS OF THE WORK

3-1 Preparatory works

1) All necessary verifications shall be made beforehand, as for the

geographical location of the job-site, the condition of the existing
facilities and the layout of piping system to the maximum extent
possible.

2) Investigations and necessary analysis shall be performed in

connection with the physical properties of the existing scales, the
conditions of water and moistures (dampness) and the connecting of
the branch pipes, before starting the detailed design work.

3) Exact requirements of materials shall be calculated during the stage

of design work, in consideration of the roughness factor.

4) Final cross-checking shall be made as for the qualities and quantities

of the materials requirement reflected in basic design, with any
additional requirements, which are not included in the basic design.

3-2 Equipment Set-Up

Following equipment shall be set up at the job-site, after confirming the

required pressure source available:

1) Launcher:
- Launcher shall be connected to the existing piping system to be
cleaned.
- A steeply inclined reducing flange, or a flange with reducing
nipple manufactured for the purpose, shall be attached to the
joint between the launcher and the piping system to be cleaned.
- Devices, such as Temperature Recorder, Pressure Recorder, Dead
Weight Recorder and Gauge (P.T.) shall also be fixed to the
launcher.

2) Receiving Trap:

- Receiving Trap shall be set to the end of the system to be cleaned.

The end part of the receiving trap shall be a formed hole flange
type to prevent the slip-away of the cleaning pig. This flange
shall be fixed in a way movable and easy removal.

3) Scale collector:

- Scale collector shall be installed in front of the receiving trap.

- This scale collector shall be so designed and manufactured to

perform speedy and thorough collection of the scales and
impurities being flushed during the cleaning process.
-
4) Plugging of Branch Pipings:

- Those piping branches, which are considered to cause problems

when pressurized, shall be blinded or plugged with reducing
nipples, in order to ensure trouble-free processing of the work.

3.3 Verification of the Preparatory Works

Necessary verifications shall be conducted on all items as described in

the fore-going paragraphs under Clauses 1 and 2 above. In case of finding
any discrepancy, even it is a minor on, such discrepancy shall be
normalized to prefect the work.

The operating condition of the Dryer, for drying the pigs at each time of
use for cleaning operations, shall be also checked at this verification stage.

3-4 Leak Tests

1) The leak tests shall be preformed, by means of either dry air or N2.
Gas.

2) All valves between the testing spans shall be opened. Provided

however that the valves connected to the branch pipings shall be
closed tight.

3) All valves of Launcher and Receiving Trap shall be closed.

4) Air compressor shall be connected to Launcher, and slowly

pressurize according to the prescribed pressure-steps.

5) Close observation shall be exercised to determine whether of not

there is any leak, by checking the time idled for each step of
pressurizing and the indications of the pressure gauge during
pressurization.

6) Pressures and temperatures shall be recorded and kept for reference,

during operations of Pressure Recorder and Temperature Recorder.

7) Necessary care shall be exercised, during reducing the pressure, to

open the vent valves of Launcher and Receiving Trap slowly and
gradually.

3-5 Preliminary Inside-Check in Piping Network

1) Gaging Pig Pass-Through:

This pig is passed through to check the condition inside the piping
network. Diameter of the pig is about 2mm bigger than that of the pipe,
being passed through a few times.

2) Moisture Removing Pig:

The pig used for the purpose is 4∼10mm bigger than the pipe in
diameter, and remove moistures in tubing system while being pushed
through.

3-6 Cleaning Process

1) Removal of Rust, Scale, Welding Spatters/Chips:

The pig used for such removing work is 4∼10mm bigger in diameter
than that of the pipe, manufactured for easy removal of such impurities.
Two similar types are used for this process, but the harder on is passed
through first. By this process, not only weld spatters, chips and scales
but other impurities are also removed. The desired speed of the pig
passage is 2∼5m/sec.

2) Surface Smoothening:

This process is performed by the highly elastic semi rigid poly-

urethane pig, in order to remove some remaining impurities that have
not been completely removed by the scale removing process as above 1).
The desired speed of the pig passage is 2∼5m/sec.

3-7 Oil/Fat Removal Process

This process is performed by the pig made of highly elastic

polyurethane and colored in white.

Oils and fats removal work is accelerated by use of TCE(trichloro-

ethyten), either rubbed to the pig or poured in between the two pigs.

NOTE:
The following work specifications shall be commonly applied to each
process described in Clauses 5,6 and 7 above:

- Pigs passing-works are to be preformed until satisfactory result is

achieved.

- Scales and impurities are removed from Receiving Trap at each time of
pig’s passing through.

- Pig is checked and examined, at each time of pass-through.

- The pressure source for all of these processes is in principle by Dry Air
or N2 Gas.

3-8 Drying Process

1) After completion of the afore-mentioned processes, the white color

pig, made of highly elastic semi-rigid polyurethane, is pushed
through the piping system.

2) For this process N2 gas is used, in order to check whether of not

there are any remains of impurities in the system cleaned.

3-9 INSPECTION

- ‘A’ GRADE

1) Moisture Test – There should be no moisture or water extracted from

FORM PIG that has passed the pipeline.

2) Debris Test – Let the WHITE TEST PIG pass the pipeline and there
should be no debris and its color should not be changed.

pipeline and there should be no debris or scale.

4) Fat Test – Let the WHITE TEST PIG pass the pipeline and there
should be no fat when the PIG is lightened up by the black light in
the darkroom.

- ‘B’ GRADE

1) Moisture Test – There should be no moisture or water extracted from

FORM PIG that has passed the pipeline.

2) Debris Test – Let the WHITE TEST PIG pass the pipeline and there
should be no debris.

1) Restoration work will start when the work has been inspected as
satisfactory.

2) Restoration work shall be performed the manner, having everything

restored as the original condition, and the surrounding job-site shall
be completely cleaned up.
