ME303 | Heat Transfer

Assignment 1
Due date: 18th April 2024
Maximum Marks: 10

1. Write a short note on the effect of the physical state of matter (solid, liquid and gases)
on thermal conductivity.

2. Write a note on the micro/nanoscale effects in solid state and fluid state on thermal
conductivity. Use relevant figures to explain, where necessary.

3. The base temperature of a fin, made of aluminum, having 5 mm diameter, is 373 K. It

is exposed to the ambient temperature of 300 K and heat transfer coefficient of 100
W/m2K. Using any scientific tool, plot the temperature distribution if the fin has
infinite length. Also, estimate how long the rod must be for the assumption of infinite
length to yield accurate estimate of heat loss.

4. A thick-walled tube of stainless steel [18% Cr, 8% Ni, k=19 W/mK] with 2 cm inner
diameter and 4 cm outer diameter is covered with a 3-cm layer of asbestos insulation
[k=0.2 W/mK]. If the inside wall temperature of the tube is maintained at 600 C and
the outer surface of the insulation is at 100 C, calculate the heat loss per meter length.
Also, calculate the tube -insulation interface temperature. Critically evaluate, in which
region the major drop in temperature occurs, and state possible reasons for this.

5. Obtain an analytical expression for the temperature distribution T(x) in a plane wall
having uniform surface temperatures T1 and T2, and a thermal conductivity which
varies linearly with temperature: 𝑘 = 𝑘0 (1 + 𝑏𝑇).

6. A prototype nuclear reactor has a fuel element design consisting of a thin aluminum
tube (cladding) filled with the nuclear material. The resulting nuclear fuel pin is 2rs in
diameter where the subscript s denotes the nuclear material outer surface (or the
cladding inner surface). The interfacial temperature Ts is measured via thermocouples.
Parameters are:
𝑞̇ = 6.5 × 107 W/m3 𝑇𝑠 = 550 K
𝑘𝑓 = 2.5 W/mK 𝑟𝑠 = 0.008 m
Where f subscript denotes the nuclear fuel material. Determine the maximum
temperature in the nuclear fuel pin. Compare this with the temperature at r=0.004 m

7. Postmortem teams sometimes use the temperature of the dead body to find the time
of the death. A person was found dead at his home at 7 AM. The temperature of the

body measured at 7 AM was found to be 28C, and the room where his body was
found had air conditioning unit running at 21C. Assuming the heat transfer
coefficient to be 6 W/m2K, estimate the time of death of that person. You may estimate
the body as cylinder having 30 cm diameter and 180 cm length. The thermophysical
properties of human body (close to room temperature) are: k =0.65 W/mK, =996
kg/m3 and c=4178 J/kgK.

8. Using scientific tool, plot the temperature variation, isotherms and heat flow lines for
2-D conduction in a rectangular plate given below.
