Mid Semester Examination
Duration: 120 minutes Marks: 30
Instructions:
1. Figure to the right indicates full marks to questions
2. Assume suitable date if required.
3. Attempt any six questions
4. Each page of answer sheet must be signed by student
5. Mention registration no. on each page of answer sheet.
Q-1 The inner and outer diameters of hollow sphere are 6 cm and 10 cm respectively. Inner surface is
maintained at 403 K while outer surface is at 303 K. rate of heat conduction is 10 W in steady state. Find
the thermal conductivity of material. Find temperature at radius of 4 cm.

Q-2 Heat is conducted through a tapered rod of rectangular cross section. Large end has cross area of 10 cm2
while that for small end is 4 cm2. The temperature at large end is 673 K and at smaller end is 373 K.
Thermal conductivity is 20 W/m-K. Assume heat conduction only along length of rod. Find rate of heat
conduction along length (L=0.3m) of tapered rod.

Q-3 The Furnace wall is made up of MS (k=12 W/m-K) plate of thickness 12 mm. Inside gas temperature is
at 1173 K while outside air is at 303 K. The inside and outside heat transfer coefficients are 100 W/m2-
K and 20 W/m2-K respectively. The wall is insulated using layer of bricks (k=1.2 W/m-K). determine
the thickness of insulation required so that outer surface of insulation will be at 353 K.

Q-4 An electric conductor of 10 mm diameter, insulated by PVC (k=0.18 W/m-K) is located in air at 303 K
having convective heat transfer coefficient of 7.8 W/m2-K. Surface temperature of base conductor is
required to maintain at 358 K. Find optimum thickness of insulation for maximum current transfer from
conductor. Find percentage change in heat transfer rate due to optimum thickness of insulation. Perform
all calculation based on unit length of conductor.

Q-5 A plate having a thickness of 0.4 cm has an internal heat generation of 200 MW/m3 and a thermal
conductivity of 25 W/m-K. One side of the plate is insulated and the other is maintained at 373 K.
Calculate maximum temperature in the plate and temperature at the mid of plate.

Q-6 A composite insulating wall is made of two layers each of 5 cm thick (k=0.4 W/m-K). The average height
of aspirate is 5 mm. If the spaces are filled with atmospheric air with k=0.02 W/m-K. Determine the total
thermal resistance assuming 50% solid to solid contact. Draw thermal circuit. Find heat transfer if
temperature difference of 70 K is maintained.

Q-7 A cylindrical rod of 2 cm diameter and 25 cm long, projects from a steam vessel maintained at 373 K.
Surrounding air temperature is 303 K. The free end of the rod is insulated. Find temperature at free end
and heat transfer from the rod if rod is made of
(i) Copper, k=330 W/m-K
(ii) Steel, k= 49 W/m-K
(iii) Glass, k=1 W/m-K
Comments on results. Take h=7 W/m2-K.
