Indus Valley Civilization (IVC)
Main Features of Indus Valley Civilization
 Town Planning: The most remarkable feature of the Harappan civilization was its urbanization. Each city
was divided into a citadel area where the essential institutions of Civil and religious life were located and the
lower residential area where the urban population lived.
 Agriculture: The Harappans cultivated wheat and barley, peas and dates and also sesame and mustard
which were used for oil. However, the people cultivated rice as early as 1,800 B.C. in Lothal. The Harappans
were the earliest people to grow cotton. Irrigation depended on the irregular flooding of the rivers of Punjab
and Sind
 Trade and Its Network: There was extensive inland and foreign trade. It has also been reasonably
established that this trade might have been overland as well as maritime. It is proved by the occurrence of
small terracotta boats, and above all, by the vast brick built dock at Lothal.
 Sciences: The Harappans knew mining metal- working and the art of constructing well-planned buildings,
some of which were higher than two stories. They were also adopting at manufacturing gypsum cement
which was used to join stones and even metals. They knew how to make long-lasting paints and dyes.
 The Indus Script: The Harappan script has not been deciphered so far, but overlaps of letters on some of
the potsherds from Kalibangan show that the writing was boustrophedon or from right to lift and from left to
right in alternate lines.
 It was earlier called and also known as Harrappa civilization initially it was believed that this civilization
flourished on the bank of Indus river (present day Sindh, Punjab provinces of Pakistan) but later excavations
revealed that it has pan-India presence up to Tamil Nadu in south.
 Excavations of Harappan sites have been ongoing since 1920.
 Sir Johan Marshell, Sir Moritimer Wheeler and Daya Ram Sahni are deeply related with early excavations
of Harappan sites.
 Jogan Khera (Kurukshetra) – ancient copper smelting furnaces were found dating back almost 5000
years.
 Urban planning, water sanitation and wide streets are the main featutes of IVC.

Manu Classes for HSSC Exams, SCO 13-14, 4th Floor, Sector 34-A, 7696679632 7696679634 Page | 8
 Latest development on IVC says- This civilization declined due to environmental changes.
 Rakhigarhi – Largest IVC site and town in the world.

Punjab to central India, and their representatives crowned him king at an assembly in April 606 giving him
the title of Maharaja. Harsha adopted Buddhism and established the Empire of Harsha , which brought all of
northern India under his control. The peace and prosperity that prevailed made his court a center
of cosmopolitanism, attracting scholars, artists and religious visitors from far and wide. The Chinese
traveler Xuanzang visited the court of Harsha, and wrote an account of him, praising his justice and
generosity.
 ‘Harshacharita’ was written by Ban Bhatt, who was his court poet. Bhritahari, Jaysen, Divakar, Mayur

 Prithviraj Chauhan, also known as Rai Pithora, was a Rajput king of the Chauhan dynasty, who ruled the
kingdoms of Ajmer and Delhi in northern India during the latter half of the 12th century.
 Prithviraj Chauhan succeeded to the throne in 1178 CE at the age of 13, and ruled from the twin capitals
of Ajmer and Delhi which he received from his maternal grandfather, Arkpal or Anangpal III of the Tomara
dynasty in Delhi. He controlled much of present-day Rajasthan and Haryana, and unified the Hindu rulers
against Turkic invasions. His elopement in 1175 with Samyukta (Sanyogita), the daughter of Jaichand, the
king of Kannauj, is a popular romantic tale in India, and is one of the subjects of the Prithviraj Raso, an epic
poem composed by Chauhan's court poet and friend, Chand Bardai.
 Chauhan defeated Shahabuddin Muhammad Ghori in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191. Ghauri attacked

 Importance of Thaneswar
 The present town of Thanesar is located on an ancient mound, known as "Harsh ka Tila" (Mound of
Harsha), west of Sheikh Chilli's Tomb complex in Thanesar. It has ruins of structures built during the reign
of Harsha, 7th century CE.
 It was part of the Cis-Sutlej states province from 1809 to 1862. Thanesar was an obscure village until the
1950s. After the partition of India, a large refugee camp was set up here, which became the nucleus of a
bustling commercial city. It grew so much that on 23 January 1973, a new district named Kurukshetra
district was created, of which Thanesar was the main town.
 The new district was named Kurukshetra to capitalize on the historical significance of the area. According
to the Mahabharata, Krishna along with his family came from Dwaraka to participate in the fair of solar
eclipse at Kurukshetra. It is believed that the Mughal Emperor Akbar accompanied by his court
historian Abul Fazl, visited Kurukshetra during the solar eclipse in 1567. Abul Fazl’s Akbarnama refers to
the eclipse in Kurukshetra and the pilgrims bathing in the Brahma Sarovar. The French traveler François
Bernier of the Mughal Emperor Shahjehan’s era also mentions the sacred baths at the Indus, Ganges and the
sacred tanks of Thaneshwar (Kurukshetra) on the occasion of the solar eclipse.
 Thanesar was destroyed and sacked many of its temples (including famous Chakra Swami Jain temple)
by Mahmud of Ghazni.
 Thanesar derives its name from the words "Sthaneshwar" which means "Place of God." The Sthaneshwar
Mahadev Temple, whose presiding deity is Lord Shiva. The water tank named Bhishma Kund is believed to
be the spot when Bhishma lay of the bed of arrows during the Mahabharata war.

Afghanistan and the Maratha Empire of Balaji Baji Rao, resulting in a Durrani victory.
 Nadirshah invaded, plundered and massacred Delhi in 1739. At the Battle of Karnal on February
1739, Nadir led his army to victory over the Mughals, Muhammad Shah surrendered. The keys to the capital
of Delhi were surrendered to Nadir. The city was sacked for several days. An enormous fine of 20 million
rupees was levied on the people of Delhi. Muhammad Shah handed over the keys to the royal treasury, and
lost the Peacock Throne, to Nadir Shah, which thereafter served as a symbol of Persian imperial might.
Amongst a treasure trove of other fabulous jewels, Nadir also gained the Koh-i-Noor and Darya-i-
Noor ("Mountain of Light" and "Sea of Light," respectively) diamonds.
 Nadir Shah Commander Ahmad Shah Abdali invaded India in1761. He left India after 3rd Battle of
Panipat and appointed his commander Nazibudaula.

 George Thomas was an Irish mercenary who was active in 18th-century India. From 1798 to 1801, he
ruled a small kingdom in Haryana, which he carved out of Hisar and Rohtak districts. He built Jahaj Kothi
(George Place) and Jahaj Pul (George Pool) at Hisar that was his residence. He ruled the area independently
up to 1801, when he was driven out by Sikh-Maratha-French confederacy. He was finally defeated and
captured by Daulat Rao Sindhia.
 British captured Haryana from Marathas in 1803 in a war with Maratha emperor Daulat Rao.
3. History of Modern Haryana & Indian Freedom Struggle.
 East India Company appointed ‘Resident’ to look after the executive judiciary and financial duties in
Haryana.
 1803-1857:- Resident Rule by East India Company in Haryana.
 The First War of Independence of 1857 was sparked by the introduction of the Enfield rifle in the
Indian Army. The cartridges of this new rifle were greased with an ingredient containing cow's fat and hog's
lard. This news spread like wild fire among the sepoys of the army. Both Hindus and the Muslims were
shocked and outraged at the use of cow's fat and hog's lard, respectively.
 They soon formed panchayats in all corps and decided to socially boycott any sepoy who used these
cartridges. This feeling continued to grow until the first War of Independence started and spread throughout
Northern India and Bengal. The first military station in northern India, where the first War of Independence
started, was at Ambala; the day was 10 May, 1857.
 Except for the princely states of Jind, Kalsia (Chhachhrauli, Yamuna Nagar), Buria, Loharu,
Pataudi, Dujana, Kunjpura, Karnal, Sampla, and some small Jagirs in Ambala and Thanesar, the
entire Haryana region was severely affected by the revolt. An important aspect of the uprising in Haryana
was complete communal co-operation and amity.
 After the 1857 Revolt, the British removed Haryana from the North Western Province and merged it
with. Punjab in February 1858. The region of Haryana was divided into two divisions that of Delhi and
Hisar.
 Social Movement in Haryana
 Swami Dayanand Sarswati visited Ambala in July 1878. On 10th April, 1875, Swami
Dayanand founded the Arya Samaj in Mumbai. The Arya Samaj spoke out against idol worship, child
marriage, untouchability, infanticide, and favored widow re-marriage and female education. Arya Samaj
found a lot of support amongst the people of Haryana (especially in the region of Rohtak and Hisar) and
soon grew into a movement that was not only socio-economic awakening but also gave rise to nationalist
thought. This was also to have a major influence in the subsequent rise against British Raj.
