TERM TWO: WORKSHEET TWO

TOPIC 2: CLIMATE
2.2. DISTANCE FROM THE SEA:
In your first worksheet, we learnt about weather and climate. You were
also introduced to latitude (distance from the equator), one of the five
factors that affect temperature and rainfall.
In this worksheet we will investigate how distance from the sea
influences temperature and rainfall

How does distance from the sea affect temperature and rainfall?
Temperature and rainfall are influenced by how far a place is from the
sea:
- Places closer to the sea have warmer winters and cooler summers.
- Places further away from the sea (or inland places) have cooler
summers and warmer winters.

The sea helps to cool coastal places in summer and warms them in
winter. The reason for this is because of how solar radiation (heat from
the sun) affects liquids (like water in the sea) and solids (like land).

Solids and liquids heat up and cool down differently. Study the table on
the next page which explain how solar radiation heats up land and
water.

THE EFFECT OF SOLAR RADIATION ON LAND AND WATER
LAND WATER (OCEANS AND SEAS)

 Solar Radiation heats up land  Solar Radiation heats up water

quickly. slower. This is because deep
water has water layers. Each
layer is heated causing water
to heat up slower than land.

 Solar Radiation heats up land  Solar Radiation heats up water

to a higher temperature than it to a warm temperature. The
heats water. temperature is not as high as
land.

 Land cools down quicker than  Water cools down slower than
water. land. This means that water
stays warmer for a longer
period.

Example: Example:

 During Durban’s summer  Many people use a pot or

months, the sand on the beach kettle for boiling water at
can be very hot, while the water home. After the water has
at the beach is much cooler. boiled and poured into a cup
or a mug, the water can
remain warm for a longer
period.

The temperature of the land and the oceans affects the air above these
areas. The air is either warmed or cooled by contact with the land or
ocean beneath it. The temperature of the air is what we measure when
we describe a place’s temperature. Refer to Figure 1 on the next page.

5
Figure 1: The diagram below shows the influence of distance from the sea on temperature.

Figure 1 shows how temperature changes during the day and the night
because of land and the sea:
1. During the day, the land is warmer, and the sea is cooler. The sea
breeze also helps with cooling the heat from the land.

2. During the night, the land is cooler, and the sea still has a warmer
temperature. The warm air above the sea transfers onto the land,
causing the air above the land to become warmer.

ACTIVITY 3: Use you notes, Figure 1 and your own knowledge and
answer the following questions:
3.1. Define the term inland. [1x2] (2)
3.2. Choose the correct answer:

3.2.1. Warm air from the oceans has the following effect on places
next to the coast:

a) Raises the temperatures.

b) Lowers the temperatures.
c) Does not affect the temperatures. [1x1] (1)

3.2.2. Places by the sea have:

a) Cooler summers and warmer winters.

b) Warmer summers and warmer winters.
c) Cooler summers and cooler winters. [1x1] (1)

3.2.3. Places inland have:

a) High temperatures in summer and winter.

b) High temperatures in summer and low temperatures
winter.
c) Low temperatures in summer and winter. [1x1] (1)
3.3. Using your notes and your own knowledge, provide an explanation
for the following:
a) Why does Durban have warmer winters and cooler summers? [1x2]
b) Why does Johannesburg have cooler (colder) winters and warmer
summers? [1x2]
