The MATATAG curriculum framework is a comprehensive approach to education developed by

the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines. The term "MATATAG" stands for
"MAlusog na TAnggol ng Ating GAlaw" which translates to "Healthy Defender of Our Actions"
in English. The MATATAG curriculum emphasizes holistic development, critical thinking, and
values education. Here are the facets of the MATATAG curriculum:

1. **Holistic Development**:
- The MATATAG curriculum aims to foster the holistic development of learners, addressing
their cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical well-being. It emphasizes the development of
multiple intelligences and competencies, including academic skills, critical thinking, creativity,
communication, collaboration, and character formation.

2. **K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum**:

- The MATATAG curriculum is aligned with the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum of the
Philippines, which spans kindergarten to Grade 12. It follows a spiral progression, with key
concepts and skills revisited and reinforced at different grade levels to promote deep
understanding and mastery.

3. **Competency-Based Learning**:
- The MATATAG curriculum focuses on developing competencies or essential skills that are
relevant and applicable to real-life situations. It emphasizes the acquisition of 21st-century skills
such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, and
socio-emotional intelligence.

4. **Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE)**:

- The MATATAG curriculum supports Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-
MLE), which recognizes the importance of using learners' first languages as the medium of
instruction in the early grades. MTB-MLE aims to improve learning outcomes by building on
students' existing language proficiency and promoting bilingualism and multilingualism.

5. **Spiral Progression and Learning Continuity**:

- The MATATAG curriculum follows a spiral progression, where key concepts and skills are
introduced, reinforced, and extended over time. This approach ensures learning continuity and
allows students to build on their prior knowledge and experiences as they progress through the
curriculum.

6. **Values Education and Character Formation**:

- The MATATAG curriculum integrates values education and character formation across all
learning areas. It emphasizes the development of positive values, ethical behavior, social
responsibility, and Filipino identity. Values such as patriotism, respect for diversity,
environmental stewardship, and empathy are infused into teaching and learning activities.

7. **Flexible Learning Modalities**:

- The MATATAG curriculum supports flexible learning modalities that cater to the diverse
needs and contexts of learners. It accommodates various learning environments, including face-
to-face classes, blended learning, distance learning, and alternative delivery modes, to ensure
access to quality education for all learners.

Overall, the MATATAG curriculum framework embodies the DepEd's commitment to providing
quality, relevant, and inclusive education that prepares learners for lifelong learning, responsible
citizenship, and active participation in society.
