deviation (sd) was 5. Determine the standard score of the student who received a
score of 88 assuming the scores are normally distributed.

2. On a test in Statistics, the mean is 65 and the standard deviation is 3. Assuming

normality, what is the standard score of a student who receives a score of 60?

3. Lody gets a score of 85 in a Biology test and 80 in a Math test. Scores in the
Biology test have a mean of 75 and sd of 5. Scores in the Math test have a mean of
76 and sd of 4. In which subject is her standing better assuming that the scores in
the two subjects are normally distributed?

4. The mean score and the standard score in the Statistics test are respectively equal
to 80 and 2.5, whereas in the Mathematics test they are respectively equal to 70
and 2. If Beth got a score of 85 in Statistics and a score 75 in Mathematics, in which
subject is her standing better assuming normality in both subjects?

5. In an English, the mean is 60 and the sd is 6. Assuming the scores are normally
distributed, what percent of score is

Problem Set No. 5

HYPOTHESIS TESTING About a Population Mean When the Variance is Known:

Show your answer using these steps:

Step 1: State the null and alternative hypotheses.
Step 2: Choose the level of significance
x−μ
z=
Step 3: Compute the test statistic σ
√n
Step 4: Determine the critical value or the p-value
Step 5: Draw a conclusion.

Problems:

1. It is claimed that the average weight of babies at birth is 3.4 kg. The average weight
of a random sample of 30 newly born babies was determined. It was found out that
the average was 3.1 kg. Is there a reason to believe that the average weight of
babies at birth is not 3.4kg? Assume that the population standard deviation is 2.2
kg. Use 0.05 level of significance.

2. A company which produces batteries claims that the life expectancy of their
batteries is 90 hrs. In order to test the claim, a consumer interest group tested a
random sample of 40 batteries. The test resulted to mean life expectancy of 87 hrs.
Using a 0.05 level of significance, can it be concluded that the life expectancy of
their batteries is less than 90 hrs? Assume that the population standard deviation is
known to be 10 hrs.
