• Geographical Location:
• Jalandhar is located on the intensively irrigated plain between the Beas and Satluj rivers.
It is surrounded by Ludhiana district in south, Kapurthala & SBS Nagar districts in west,
Hoshiarpur in north and Ferozepur & Moga district in south-west.
• Administrative Divisions:
• From Administrative point of view, District Jalandhar is divided into five Tehsils:
• 1. Jalandhar-1
• 2. Jalandhar-2
• 3. Shahkot
• 4. Nakodar
• 5. Phillaur.

• Jalandhar:
• a town of great antiquity. The district is named after Jalandhar, a demon king, who finds
a mention in the Puranas and Mahabharata. According to another legend, Jalandhar
was the capital of the kingdom of lava, son of Rama. According to yet another version
Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from the vernacular term ‘Jalandhar' means
area inside the water, i.e. tract laying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas, still
another name of Jalandhar had been Trigantta, as it was watered by three rivers,
Satluj, Beas and Ravi.
• Phillaur:
• Phillaur owes its origin to a Sanghera Jat, Phul, who called the town after himself
Phulnagar. Two Ancient sites Theh Ghatti and Katpalon fall in Phillaur tehsil.

• Nakodar:
• The town is said by one account to have been originally held by Kambohs.
• Another tradition makes an Afghan, Nakodar Khan, the founder.
• Another account says that, when Manj Rajputs crossed the Satluj, Malik Nekdar Khan
popularly known as Baba Malik, a brother of Rai Izzat founded Nakodar. His shrine still
exists inside the town. The word Nakodar is a corrupted form of the Persian words
neki dar which mean 'gate of goodness or virtue’.
• A fourth account makes it founded by the Nikudari legion of the Mughals. Outside the
Nakodar town, there are two fine Muhammadan tombs: The Tomb of Mohammed
Momin and Tomb of Haji Jamal.

• Other Important Towns:
• Nurmahal:
• The modern town is due to the fostering of Nur Jahan (after whom it is named), the
consort of Emperor Jahangir and who is said to have been brought up here. She had
the imperial sarai constructed by Nawab Zakarya Khan, Governor of the Doab
between 1619 and 1621 A.D and settled numerous families in her new town. The sarai
is remarkable specimen of oriental architecture and is maintained as a protected
monument by the Archaeological Department.
• Kartarpur:
• was founded by the fifth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Arjan Dev ji.The town is famous for its
furniture industry in world. The quality of the wood works is internationally
acknowledged.

• As per Census 2011, the population of the district is 21,93,590 and the density of
population is 835 per km. The sex ratio of the district is 915 and 82.48% people of
the district are literate.

• Economy:
• Jalandhar is famous for its sports industry and equipment manufactured in Jalandhar
has been used in many international sporting games including Olympics,
Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, among others. It is also a hub for manufacturing
of hand tools. Jalandhar is also famous for its leather industry, leather for footwear,
leather goods, furniture being sold to export houses .
• Other facts:
• Jalandhar was named after a mythological demon king and is known for a famous
Hindu shrine – Devi Talab Mandir. One of the cities here houses the famous Tombs of
Ustads.
• The Central districts namely Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala have moderately
low forest area intensity.

• Places of Interest:
• Devi Talab Mandir, Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi at Jalandhar. The Tomb of
Mohammed Momin and Tomb of Haji Jamal at Nakodar; Two Ancient sites Theh
Ghatti and Katpalon falls in Phillaur tehsil.
• Devi Talab Mandir: it is also the site of the famous Hariballabh Sangeet Mela, held in
the memory of the saint-musician, Swami Hariballabh at Devi Talab near the
samadhi of the saint.
• Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi: where 6 Guru, Guru Hargobind Singh ji granted
interview to Muslim holy saint popularly known as Shaikh Darvesh. The saint
blindfolded his eyes so that he could swear before the Mughal authorities that he
had not seen the Guru. The great Guru had depth discussion with the Shaikh
Darvesh about spiritual matters which created good impact on the holy man.
