1 You are provided with four pieces of specimen P labelled P1, P2, P3 and P4. You are also
provided with sugar solutions labelled A, B, C and D.

(a) (i) Measure the length of specimen P1 and record it as initial length in Table 1.1.

(ii) Repeat step (i) above for specimens P2, P3 and P4.

(iii) Put specimen P1 in solution A, P2 in solution B, P3 in solution C and

P4 in solution D. Leave the specimens in the solutions for 30 minutes.

In the meantime proceed to question 2.

[3]
(iv) After 30 minutes, use forceps to remove specimen P1 from solution A and mop the
excess solution with a paper towel.

(v) Measure the length of P1 and record it as final length in Table 1.1.

(vi) Repeat steps (iv) and (v) for the remaining specimens, P2, P3 and P4.

(b) Change in length is calculated by subtracting the initial length from the final length.

Calculate the change in length for each of the four specimens P1 to P4 and record the
results in Table 1.1.

(c) Sugar solutions A, B, C and D are of concentrations 0 %, 15 %, 35 % and 50 %, but not

necessarily in that order.

Using your results in Table 1.1, identify and record the concentrations of the sugar
solutions A, B, C and D in Table 1.2.

2 You are provided with specimen D33 and two pieces of specimen D34.

(a) With the aid of a hand lens provided, make a large labelled drawing of specimen D33.

[7]

(b) (i) Measure and record the longest length of your drawing and indicate with a line
where you took the measurement.

Measure and record the corresponding length of specimen D33.
