THE DOG NAMED DUKE

BY William D. Ellis

About the Author: Born in 1918 in Concord, Massachusetts, Ellis

began writing at the age of 12, at the urging of an elementary-school
teacher who early on discerned his talent. Ellis is supposed to have
been born about 1700, received an ordinary education, and began life
as a plain farmer. For nearly fifty years he held a farm at Little
Gaddesden, Hertfordshire. Young William developed a love of plants
in his youth and became a gardener. He worked first in the East of
England, then at a nursery north of London, and eventually for a
wealthy family in Stoke Newington. Being of a religious nature, he
applied to train as a Christian missionary for the London Missionary Society and was accepted to
the school. Ellis's most important work was Polynesian Researches. This established him as a
talented ethnographic and geographical writer, and was reviewed in the Quarterly Review by
Robert Southey. The work of The Practical Farmer, or the Hertfordshire Husbandman, 223 pages
octavo size, was first published in 1732. It has gone through five editions, the last edition
published in 1759. It treats the meliorating of soils, the grains, grasses, cows, sheep, and suckling
of calves; pigeons and rabbits; forest trees; manures, hops, foreign wheats; comparison of different
methods of farming.
