1. Explain the three types of grants the federal government uses to influence states. Give an
example of each.

name of the committee and what are they in charge of?
4. Explain the roles of the following congressional leadership positions: Speaker of the
House, President of the Senate, and the House Majority Whip.
6. Name 3 third parties in the US (from now or the past). Why are 3rd parties not popular in
the United States?
7. Why are the states and local governments “laboratories of democracy”? Cite and explain
an example of this concept.
You need to pick TWO of the following three topics and write a 2-3 paragraph essay about EACH
topic you chose. Cite information from our class to support your answer.
Topics:
• Imagine you want to become president of the United States (and you fit the basic
requirements: 35 years old, American citizen born in the US or to American parents, etc).
What is the process from starting your candidacy to becoming president? Would you run
as a Democrat or Republican? What would be in your party platform?
• Analyze the Supreme Court case: Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue. Explain
what the case is about and what issue the case is attempting to answer? If you were a
Supreme Court justice, how would you vote on this case? You should include information
from what you know about the American political system as well as other Supreme Court
cases we have learned about.
• Explain the current state of political polarization in the US. What trends have been
happening? What are some examples of polarization? What are some of the causes of this
polarization? Provide at least two solutions to stop or slow down the current trend of
polarization.
