Week 5 – MS Word
Word processor
Software which is capable of processing words, paragraphs and all other entire
documents.
Save a File
Storing the content, you have created in a software program which can be
retrieved later.
File Extension
A string of characters linked to a filename, usually preceded by a full stop and
indicating the format of the file. Example, docx, html.
Toolbar
A strip of symbols or icons on a computer screen that provides quick access to
specific functions.
Ribbon
A command bar that categorizes a program’s features into a series of tab at the
top of a window.
Short Cut Keys A special key combination that involves using Ctrl or Alt keys with some other
keys which causes a particular command to be executed.
Font
A set of printable or displayable text characters in a specific style and size.
Format Painter A tool that allows you to duplicate and apply the formatting of characters and
paragraphs to existing text.
Text Alignment A feature in word processing software that lets users to align text horizontally on
a page or document.
Outline Displays content in a bulleted list structure, which is beneficial for creating
headings and restructuring entire paragraphs within a document.
Draft Displays only text in your document, which is used for quick editing.
Styles Combinations of formatting features that can be applied to text to quickly change
its appearance.
Themes A set of colors, fonts, and effects that determines the overall look of your
document.
Editor An AI tool that helps with spell check, grammar check, and much more.
Thesaurus A software feature in Word that finds synonyms and antonyms for the selected
word.
Resume Assistant A feature in Word 365’s online version that helps in creating effective resumes by
offering content suggestions to be included.
Track Changes A feature which allows you to view the changes that were made to the document.
In-Text Citations In the body of the document, which is used when referencing, summarizing,
paraphrasing, or quoting from another source.
Bibliography A list of sources you have referred or collected information and used in your
Word document, usually placed at the end of the document.
APA Style The most commonly used style to cite sources within the social sciences.
Endnotes Similar to footnotes, these are explanations, comments, or references to
something mentioned in your document. They typically appear at the end of your
document and are called endnotes.
Table of Contents A snapshot of the headings and page numbers in your document. You can easily
update changes by right-clicking on the Table of Contents heading and choosing
Update Table.
