DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
GENERAL
The forflard acting I//l{ conveler provid€s a conüolled hydraulic outpur pr€ssure
directly proportional to the electrical input control signal. This ou¡pul pressure is
independent of variation in output flow rate up to maximum flow The rnajor
parts of the I/ll convener, shoum itr Figure 2-1, are:

The electronics in the IitI convete¡ consist of two printed circuit boards mounted
above the torque motor and p¡essure transducer. These circuit boards provide the
power supply volBge regulation, input signal condi¡ioning, pressure transduce¡
feedback, control amplifier, output driver, failure detector, po\r¡er-up override, and
oprional dither. Shos'n in Figore 2-2 is a block diagam of the electronics.

Manual 851¡l8A
The I/lI
converter power supply operates on 1&to-32 vdc inpu¡ power. The
power supply section of the electronics consists of a switching type po$,er supply
that converb the i¡put voltage ro the fegulated 20 and 15 vdc used by the
ele4tronics in the oonvener. Inpur polarity and transient pro¡ecúon is also
provided to prevent damage to lhe conve¡ter.
The input control signal of +ro-m mi iamps (mA) or 20-10-160 mA from rhe
electronic governor is oonvefled to a Gto-4 Vdc control signal. This signal is
¡hen compared with the output of the pt€ssure transducer fe€dback cirq¡it in lhe
control amplifier to determine the control signal rhat is used by rhe oulpul driver
to position lhe ¡orque motor.
CONTROL AMPLIFIER
The control amplifier @mpares the control signal to the pressure transduoer
fe€dback signal. The difrerence between these two signals is the amounr of
output efror. This error signal is then u.s€d by lhe output driver to pfoduce the
drive cr¡rent to position the tofque mo¡or to conecl the output pressufe to
match the d€sired input @ntrol signal. The control amplilier has a gain
adjustmenr to match rhe dynamics of üe control s'6rem with those of rhe
con¡rolled devic€.
OUTPUT DRIVER
The output driver con\ens the efror conection signal from the control amplifier
lo ¡he drive current necessery to ddve the torque motor.

When an error is detected, relay Kl will energize. Relay contacts are provided for
us€ oulside of the l/tl cDnverter. (Note: a failure indication can also be an
i¡dic¿tion of loss of input hydraulic oil supply to the l/ll converter')
Tl|e monitor output circuit provides a 4'to'20 milliamp (mA) outPut signal

PRESSURE TRANSDUCER
TORQUE MOTOR
The torque motor, see Figure 2-1, controls ¡he flow of the supply oil (pilot
pressure) to the pilot \¡alve plunger. Drive cunent from the electronics pocitions
the flapper valve which controls the supply oil flow. When the flapper lve is ¡o
the left, lhe supply is shut off and the drain is op€n. When the valve is to the
right the drain is shut off and rhe supply is op€n and allowed to flow ro the left
side of the pilot valve plunger. When rhe valve is in b€twe€n the two sides
(supply and drain) the pilot \¡alve plunger is positioned at a poinr propofional to
the po6ition of the llapper valve.
The pilot \¡alve plunger is a pilot opera¡ed pressure reducing valve w¡th an ofte¡
bias spring (pilot l¡alve plunger spring). The ourput posirion of rhe valve is
directly proportional to rhe pilot pressure from rhe totque moror. The bias
spring is use<l to ofBet the output in relation ro lhe pilor pressure al¡ol[ing for
gfeatef aocuracy et low outpur pressure. For a given pilot pressure, lhe vatve will
move to allow flow from supply lo ¡he output, causing the output p¡essure to
incre¡sa Thh pressute is also routed to the bias sp ng end of the pilot \¿lve
plunger by means of a dritted passage in the c€nter of rhe plunger. When the
output pressure plus rhe bias spring load is e4ual to the pilot pressure, the valve
will re-aenter and slop incfeasing flou/ to the output. At rhis point the valve is a
force balanced qnrcm. Any change in the pitot pressure or the output pr€ssufe
will r€sult in corrective action to reeshblish the force batance. This oonec{¡rr
aclion wi¡l b€ either a shift to allow more flow from supply to output thereby
increasing output pressure, or a shifr to open üe drain thereby decreasing ourput
pressure. The pressure will increase or decrss€ until the foroe balance across the
pi¡ot \¡alve is ¡gain balaDced.
CASE ASSEMBLY
The case is made of anodized aluminum with steel valve and sle€ve. The cas¡
aluminum covef screr¡,s onlo the b¿se and provides a secure safety seal. The
electronics a¡e protecred inside lhe case, which has a b¡eather port with llame
arreslor insta¡led. Wiring for the I/FI conver¡er is by means of the 7-pin
connector athched to the cas€.

INSTALIATION
GENERAL
RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS
The l/ll convener was carefully packed at the factory to protecr it from damage
during shipment. However, careless handling du¡ing shipment could haw caused
damage. Before unpacking the unit, c¿retully inspect the container for signs of
shipping damage. Notify the shipper if damage is found.
UNPACIqNG INSTRUCTIONS
C¡refully unpack the I/H convener and remove from the shipping oontainer' Do
not femove lhe shipping plugs unti¡ ¡eady to conne¡t piping and electficsl
connections.
MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
The l/ll con¡ener is designed for velical mounting, however, it can be mounted
in other attitudes as long as the vent hole is not facing up.
IOCATION CONSIDERATION
When selecting a location fo¡ rhe I/H @nverter @nsider the following:
b. Place the unit as close as poGsible to the actuatol delric€ to reduc€ the length
of the output line from the converter to the actuator.
d. Allow for removal of the col€r to gain access to the adjustments otr lhe
eleclrical circuit board inside lhe conveler.

IÍYDRAI'LIC CONNECTIONS
Three hydraulic lines m|¡st be oon¡ecte{t to the I l converter for opefation, they
are üe supply input, cDntrol ourpu! and drain.
The supply input hydraulic line is connecred to the pon marked SUppLy. The
oil supplied must b€ ñlrered to 25 microns ab6olute before going to rhe VH
@nvertef.
The conrrol ou¡put hydraulic line is oonnecred to the pon marked CONTROL
DRAIN CONNECTION
The drain hydraulic line is connected to the ñtting marked DRAIN. The drain
line shoul<l b€ connected back to the oit sump in such a way to offef the le¿st
amount of backpressure at the I/H con\€ner.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
Use 14-18 AWG wire for the power supply input leads.
Use 1&22 AWG twisted pair shielded wire for the contto[ing input te¿ds.
The shield must be grounded at control end only.
Use 18-22 AWG wite for the relay indic¿tion wires, if used. Relav co¡ucrs
are rated for a resistir¡e load at 0.3 A at ll5 Vac maximum.
