Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What other measures do you think might be effective?
Increasing traffic jams and pollution have become one of the major concerns in many countries.
While some people believe that rising petrol costs are the most effective measure for these
problems, I completely disagree with that. I think there are several effective alternatives worth
considering.
On the one hand, increasing the price of petrol is only a short-term solution to reduce the impacts
of traffic and pollution. Firstly, it is clear that more and more people insist on using cars to
commute due to its conveniences; therefore, higher petrol prices may not be able to halt the rising
demand for this vehicle. Also, even though it would cost more to travel by cars, rich people and
middle- class workers may have the ability to afford it at any cost as long as their means of
transport supports their daily life. As a result, streets will remain crowded, and pollution will not
be cut down on.
On the other hand, there are a number of other solutions that should be taken into account. First of
all, in order to reduce the number of private vehicles, the use of public transport needs to be
encouraged. This means that the public transport system should be well- operated and affordable
for all citizens. For example, the expansion of bus routes to city outskirts and more flexible
schedules can minimize the chance of people using cars in the city. Secondly, I think that building
car parks and shopping malls outside of the center can also be helpful. That way, inhabitants can
use buses if they want to travel around the city center, preventing the intensity of traffic in peak
hours.
To recapitulate, instead of imposing higher prices on fuels, governments should take other
alternatives into account in order to not only discourage the number of cars used, but also involve
individuals to consider other means of driving.
