Project Summary
Rapid anthropogenic climate change in an increasingly urbanised world urgently require new professionals with a
scientific understanding of urban climate and ability to work within the planning system to manage and lead
sustainable change. Building on the success and lessons from MUrCS, the aim of the new Master of Urban
Climate and Sustainability1.5 (MUrCS1.5) is to produce high calibre graduates to understand, assess and
manage climate resilience in cities to live within a 1.5oC warmer world. MUrCS1.5 will integrate three themes
(science of nature-based solutions as the approach to mitigation, with circular economy as the driver for urban
planning, with sustainability leadership as the management goal). Students will choose one of these thematic
areas as their main and another as their secondary specialism. MUrCS1.5 will offer a two-year, 120 ECTS Master
degree on the basis of a jointly developed curriculum by the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), UK, LAB
University of Applied Sciences (LAB), Finland, University of Huelva (UHU), Spain and University of Applied
Sciences Dresden, Germany (HTWD). It will lead to triple degrees – MSc in Sustainable Urban Environment
(GCU), MEng Environmental Technology (Urban Sustainability) (LAB) and MSc Environmental Technology
(UHU), fully nationally accredited, while steps will be taken to release the fourth degree (MEng in Environmental
Engineering) (HTWD) during the preparatory period. The consortium includes five academic Associate Partners
from Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, South Africa and Brazil plus eleven local authority/public sector/private sector
bodies to facilitate problem-based learning and industry-relevant thesis projects in a work
placement-setting.MUrCS1.5 is aimed at both existing urban professionals as well as those with multidisciplinary
environmental backgrounds and will create professional pathways in leading sustainable urban climate change.
Graduates will gain critical understanding of the complexity of urban sustainability and the need for local action to
combat climate change. They will develop intellectual and practical skills as well as the ability to use tools for the
collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to urban climate change and sustainability. These and the
transferable skills gained during the programme will enable graduates to operate in senior positions in both the
public and the private sectors to lead sustainable and climate sensitive urban change.Three compulsory mobility
period are built into the study programme (Semester 1 – Glasgow; Semester 2 – Lahti and Semester 3 – Huelva)
plus a two week long intensive field work period in Dresden. Together with developing transverse skills
(inter-cultural awareness, foreign language competencies, research methods and communication and
employability skills) students develop a wholistic worldview and technical and intellectual competencies to
manage and lead urban climate change in a sustainable manner
