Project Summary
Modern neuroscience has reached a point where progress requires analyzing vast amounts of data, a skill not
traditionally provided to neuroscientists. At the same time, data scientists lack specialized training in
neuroscience, thereby lacking a significant perspective that influences the quality and depth of their insights. A
new academic trend where neuroscience is introduced as a separate educational track at the undergraduate level
further hinders the ripeness of specialists as their education lacks essential features.
These developments drive the pressing market demand for combined brain and data expertise in neurotech,
technological innovation, healthcare, and education. These conditions present a unique opportunity for
educational innovation in the form of an out-of-the-box educational pathway focusing on the intellectual mobility of
multidisciplinary scholars into the growing field of neuro-data science.
In modern science, breakthroughs often occur at the intersection of multiple disciplines. The proposed project
presents a highly needed yet lacking synergistic training program in brain and data sciences. It aims to develop
an integrated multidisciplinary curriculum in brain and data sciences to cultivate researchers with in-depth
knowledge in both fields. Students will be trained in foundational neuroscience and data science during the first
program year while applying these skills to analyze neural data during their second year.
Students will study and research in leading institutions and countries. This holistic approach to students’ training
will enable them to forge new mindsets and approaches while increasing individual contributions to a
knowledge-based economy and society. Introducing this program to European HEIs will create a new generation
of multidisciplinary scholars, highly skilled in investigating the most complex problem faced by the human race:
the human mind and brain in health and disease.

Project Summary
The worldwide continued trend towards performance-based fire safety design (PBD) has created a strong need
for high-level education in the broad multi-disciplinary field of Fire Safety Engineering (FSE). The IMFSE 2-year
programme (4 semesters of 30 ECTS-credits) seeks to continue its essential role in this, offering as many
students as possible from all over the world the needed skills and knowledge to establish high-quality PBD in
various settings, through top-notch education, ranging from in-depth theoretical concepts to broad practical skills.
FSE involves a multiplicity of disciplines integrated around a fire safety strategy, aiming at delivering safe living
environments. On top of that, FSE is also a natural companion for the transition into a more sustainable world and
society. The original focus of IMFSE has been on the built environment, where applying FSE principles improves
the global level of fire safety, while allowing more freedom in the use of more sustainable, but perhaps
combustible, materials and in architecture of complex buildings. Reducing damage to buildings and prolonging
their life cycle contributes to a more sustainable built environment. The inclusion of Universitat Politècnica de
Catalunya (UPC) into the IMFSE consortium enables world class education on wildfires and industrial fire
protection. These are key for the European Green Deal: reducing the effect of such fire hazards has a direct
impact on the environment and climate. The IMFSE programme will now be offered by 4 Full Partner Universities:
Ghent University (Coordinator), Lund University, The University of Edinburgh and UPC. There are also 4
Associated Partners where students can perform their master thesis research: The University of Queensland,
ETH Zürich, The University of Maryland, University of Science and Technology of China. The mobility structure
gives students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of top universities in the field of FSE.

Project Summary
Medicines play a crucially beneficial role in society, and their importance and use are expected to increase due to
the expanding and aging world population. However, the increased use of medicines also heightens the
environmental exposure, stressing the eco-system and adversely impacting our long-term health, as exemplified
by reproductive disorders by drug residues in the environment and resistance to antibiotics. Moreover,
socio-economic equality towards medicines is a global challenge. There is thus a need for a global systematic
approach, followed by competent authorities as well as academic, civil and industrial organisations, to take into
account sustainability over the entire life cycle of a medicine. Indeed, emphasis should also be paid to
sustainability from the “cradle”, i.e. in the drug discovery phase, rather than only at the later stages of product
development or clinical stages (the “grave”), in line with tackling the root cause as recommended in 6-sigma lean
philosophy.
In this International Master of Sciences in Sustainable Drug Discovery (S-DISCO), a unique, transdisciplinary
programme is developed, covering a broad range of selected pharmaceutical disciplines, focused on the early
discovery phases and intertwined with environmental and socio-economic topics. It is jointly delivered by 4
complementary European universities (i.e. Ghent University, University of Lille, Medical University of Gdansk and
University of Groningen) and supported by international experts from industry and relevant (academic) institutions
to assure a unique, worldwide excellence and attractiveness. A clear mobility track is proposed, giving the
students the opportunity to study and gain specific expertise at the different partner universities.
