Kakeibo is a Japanese budgeting technique that focuses on mindful
spending and financial awareness.

By setting clear goals, tracking your spending, and reflecting on your

habits, you can take control of your finances and work towards a more
secure financial future.

Use this guide and template to help you get started with Kakeibo and
take control of your finances.
STEP 1
Write down your income. If you have multiple streams of income, fill in a new row for each stream. Then
calculate the total.

STEP 2
Collect information on your fixed expenses like rent, utilities, insurance and jot them down. Then identify
the total.

STEP 3
Determine how much money you want to save this month. Be realistic with this number.

STEP 4
Determine how much money you have leftover after taking your income, fixed expenses, and savings goal
into account. If you have a leftover balance from last month, incorporate it here.

STEP 5
Determine how much you can realistically spend per day to still achieve your savings goal. Use the total
money you have leftover from Step 4 and divide it by the number of days in the current month to determine
your per day spend.

STEP 6
Throughout the month, record every expense in your chosen categories. Be diligent and honest about your
spending habits. Make sure to use the detailed Monthly Tracker to categorize your expenses into the four
main buckets: Need (essential expenses), Want (non-essential but important), Culture (cultural and
personal development), and Unexpected (unexpected or irregular expenses).

See below for examples of these expenses

Need Want Culture Unexpected

Rent/Mortgage Groceries Books Gift

Utilities Transportation Courses Repairs

Subscription Medical
Insurance Hobbies
Services Expenses

STEP 7
Calculate your total monthly expenses to get a holistic view

STEP 8
Breakdown your spending by category

STEP 9
At the end of each week or month, reflect on your spending by answering these 4 questions. Use this
reflection time to adjust your spending habits and plan for the upcoming week.
